Good morning!
Our city, Berkley (a suburb of Detroit, MI) sent us a cease and desist letter for our AirBNB stating it violated the cities tourist home ordinance. Thanks to your support and recommendations from the AirBNB Groups we reached out to our city immediately to start the process of requesting a change to the current law.
After two meetings with the city planner along with one of our city council members, we have come to a point where real action is going to take place. Our council member said there's really only one member on the fence (out of five) who he will take all of our positive information we provided back to him. If things work out well, we will have our first work session with the council the third week of November, and put it to a vote in December. Our council member today suggested a business license with a fee of $75-100 along with annual inspections of the homes. We are completely on board as we always want our guests coming into a safe and welcoming environment!
Here's what I am in need of from awesome hosts like you! If you've gone through something similar with your city, or know how your city has adopted changes to their ordinances, I need that information to send to our city council. They would like to look at the language other cities have adopted to support AirBNB.
In the meantime, we are allowed to honor our current reservations, but they have asked us to not accept any more until we come to some resolution. However, it looks like if everything goes well, that's really only two months. We can live with that!
Thanks again for all of the support!
