ISIS in town?
I had an inquiry late last night from a fellow with no verification, only a first name and a photo of himself. In the photo he's wearing a black headband and garb that looks like an ISIS commando. In one hand is a large bottle of wine, in the other hand appears to be some sort of furry, possibly dead animal. All this is standing in front of a wall map of the Middle East.
He wanted to know if he could come late tonight for two nights stay.
I replied "Please define "late", and can you add some sort of verification..."
I haven't heard back, and frankly, I hope I don't.
Have you ever had that hair standing up on the back of your neck feeling from an inquiry?

When the hairs stand up, I always decline. I offer no explanation and simply say I am unable to host you.
Robin
If it doesn't feel right, decline! Go with your spider senses, interesting you should post this now, I was considering Insta book, I think perhaps sticking with my own screening process makes me feel more comfortable with whom is staying in my home.

Sounds odd. But a Muslim would be unlikely to pose with a big bottle of wine. My current guest's photo, I must admit, has him brandishing a samurai sword. He's my first guest in our home. A delightful 20-year-old Japanese exchange student exploring transferring to Minnesota.

Muslim are not all ISIS fighters neither the other way around
Evelyn
I have told guests to change their profile photos.. because they are scary.. really not thinking that it's our first impression of who they're.
Andrew (andrew)
That is a very strange choice for a profile photo, and regardless of the men's political or religious beliefs, it seems that he'd have to be lacking in social skills to not see how it would create an uncomfortable first impression.
That said, the bottle of wine would eliminate any possibility that he's ISIS. They have pretty harsh penalties for that.
Because I'm an in-home host, I occasionally use a bit of social selection when considering inquiries. If someone's profile sounds fanatical for any particular religion or belief system (regardless of which one) I feel like they'd be a bad fit for a diverse cosmopolitan neighborhood. Plus, I tend to be even more unfiltered in person than I am in writing...

Thank you all for your perspectives. I want to be clear that I was not inferring any sort of religious slant at all, merely stating what my first visual impression was. That, plus the fact the gentleman had no profile information at all gave me the instant red flag so many talk about. I never heard backso I didn't need to deny his request.
