Hi All,
We're on septic and there are certain items that shouldn't be flushed in any toilet, especially septic tanks.
How would you suggest phrasing it in House Rules?
I always appreciate your advice. Thanks.

Please flush only toilet paper. Dispose of other items in the covered bit provided.
I have a sign in my bathroom as well.

idem Please flush only toilet paper. Otherwise it cloaks. And when they arrive , i say , use only paper toilets or you will have a very bad stay. Seeing the panic faces , i know they got the point.

Put only pee, poo n paper in my pot please.
Michele
I had this borrowed from another host. Bless them. . WATER AND SEWER: DO NOT FLUSH anything other than toilet paper. No feminine products should be flushed at anytime. If it is found that feminine products have been flushed and clog the sewer system, you will be charged damages.

We just had to respond to this post. We are located in a rural area and also have septic system which is very sensitive to paper waste. We do not mention this in our Airbnb house rules, but we do place the following sigh on top of the toilet:
We are on a sensitive septic system. Please, only discard toilet paper into the toilet bowl. All other items (tampons etc.) should be disposed of into the trash.
We have never had a problem with our 135 guests (yes not all guests leave reviews) causing a plumbing issue except for one. During one of our guests stays the septic line was completely clogged. We had to call to plumber for an emergency repair which was very expensive. To our surprise we found out our guest was doing a colon cleansing during her weekend stay with us. Lots of toilet paper and…
Hence during check in we point out the sign and caution the use of inordinate amount of toilet paper.

We actually have a sign above the toiler to say the following. Please do not flush tampons or sanitary napkins in toilet. Please use the bin provided. It is as simple as saying it as it is.
Serena
Yes. I'd be direct and use plain English. Even an image helps for guests who may not have English as first language. An infographic of things not to put in toilet: nappies, condoms, sanitory towels, dead goldfish etc. People can flush the oddest things too.
Margaret
I would just say nothing except toilet paper. Maybe with a picture. Wipes have caused blockages for me. Even vast quantities have caused problems. (I got the line replaced in the end because I had these issues).
sorry I meant to say too much toilet paper has also blocked the sewage

I have had the same problem as Margaret and Don and Christine mentioned. Because toilet paper is obviously okay to put in the toilet, guests may not stop to think that TOO MUCH toilet paper could be a problem. But it is. And I have had about 7-8 clogs occur solely for this reason. I was able to snake them all out myself, but someone who isn't handy would end up with a lot of expense with this happening a lot. WHen I had one guest in particular, the toilet clogged three separate times during that guest's stay. Then I would go several months and all was fine.
THis can potentially be a tricky issue to discuss with guests because one's needs in the bathroom, particularly as regards the toilet, can be sensitive. How much toilet paper one uses/needs can be a sensitive issue, getting into subjects and topics that one would rather not discuss.
BUt because of the large number of clog issues I was having, and the fact that a couple times the clog caused water overflow onto the floor which then seeped downstairs into the room below, I had to put up a sign by the toilet, which states that nothing but TP is to go into the toilet and that guests should not put "too much" TP in the toilet, but, if needed, dispose of extra TP in the waste basket.
