Alain de Botton on Airbnb and its "Philosopher King" CEO
"Online travel company Airbnb has collaborated with philosopher Alain de Botton to relaunch his book The Art of Travel -- now titled The New Art of Travel.
The book features a new chapter by de Botton and a foreword by Airbnb CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky. The new edition of a book that Chesky said has long been a passion of his also has a specially designed cover, which makes use of the Airbnb logo.
"De Botton describes a yearning to appropriate the culture of a place and make it our own -- something that often results in people who never usually visit museums visiting museums misguidedly thinking that is the best way of understanding the essence of a place. "What we really want to do is talk to people,' he said. 'And Airbnb, for reasons that are almost by the by, has slightly stumbled upon this. The real draw is not the price, is not the convenience, but that you're going to have an excuse to meet a local.'"

My two cents: I've always been a fan of de Botton, since reading his "How Proust Can Change Your Life." Co-incidentally, I re-read The Art of Travel only a couple of weeks ago. De Botton is great at applying philosophical ideas to practical everyday life in a way that is simple to understand and entertaining to read.
This article reinforces a belief I've held about Airbnb for a while - that it is moving away from being just an accommodation provider to a company whose mission is to change the way people travel.
Airbnb Open-goers - I wouldn't be surprised if de Botton will be one of the speakers, or at least if this book appears in our tote bags. :-) btw, this is pure speculation on my part.

You could be right! I know that Alain was already a speaker for Airbnb at their internal all-hands event last year (the one they flew all employees in for) b/c I hosted him at one of the properties I manage in the Mission
