Perfumes/colognes, fragrances, "Air Fresheners" , fabric softener and cleaning products...do you know what they contain?
Over the years there have been many threads on host community groups that in some way have pertained or referred to various fragrances, air fresheners, or cleaning products that hosts use, which these hosts may not realize contain toxic chemicals, including known carcinogens (cancer-causing chemicals). I think it's worth highlighting this issue. Hosts should make their own choices about what to do in their own homes, but I always think it's best when choices we make are informed ones, and we have the knowledge or facts needed to make whatever is the best choice for us.
Briefly -- many if not most synthetic "air fresheners" (such as Febreze and Glade) on the market in the US and around the world contain toxic chemicals, which are dangerous to breathe. Manufacturers of these products are not required to list their ingredients, so consumers can't easily know that the products contain dangerous chemicals. However, many studies have been done on these products which reveal the toxins they contain. Also, many people are fortunate that they have a negative physical response to these toxic chemicals -- they will get a headache or sore throat pretty quickly after being exposed to them, so their bodies are reliably telling them "get away". Unfortunately not everyone has a body that helps them like this, and these people may expose themselves to such chemicals for many years before they suffer ill health effects from them.
I think particularly for those of us inviting guests into our homes, it's important to be aware of these things, because in this case our choices are effecting not only ourselves, but potentially the health of others as well.
For every toxic chemical we use to "freshen" the air (really we're polluting the air with them) or to clean our homes, there are natural products which are safe to use and can accomplish the same purpose. It's worth putting in some time to find out about this and use the safer, natural products.
Febreze contains 84 chemicals known to be dangerous to humans, as described here:
