It seems that airbnb's forcing the matter leads to some strange effects. Some cures that create new ailments.
I have it on for one listing for 15 months now, with nearly all restrictions you can add:
Recommended guests only can IB. That means, they need a review and no thumbs down sign. Airbnb is not specific on that, no idea if one thumbs down sign blocks them forever or only to the next recommendation.
Airbnb's own terms ask for a profile photo.
I got a few IB with a symbolic photo or none, even with verified Id. Airbnb explains, that these guests had a photo for verification and then switched it.
That could be excluded by the software dedecting a picture that is no portrait or to need a person verify it again, when the photo used for verification is changed. Needs manpower, but not that much. Most people would refrain from changing it, if a warning pops up.
I got a few without review, which is explained that they themselves did not write one yet, but their last host did. That stretches it a bit dar for my taste, as I want to see the review and crosscheck what they wrote.
For tonight I got the worst case so far: the picture of an American actress (thanks to Elaine for identifying her), a French first name, a Fench last name, country Taiwan, 2 Chinese words in the mail (to travel), no answer on any contact from me and airbnb in 3 languages.
This guest had a new profile, but had travelled in a group. The paying guest had been reviewed but my guest was not mentioned.
The whole thing was dishonest and airbnb considering a group member recommended felt dishonest too.
After a few rude non communicating guests, I had added a rule to communicate eta and means of transport and to stay reachable after booking. It was quite easy to get rid of the booking and I got a new one within a few hours.
I accepted to give them 24 hours, to try to communicate with the guest. I thought they would call her in Chinese, from a local office, but they just email in English - I had already done that and had added a google translation.
The fact that the person had stolen a pucture online and pretended it to be hers, did not bother the CS persons. It was a reason to cancel, but nothing more. They will try to find her another host.
The cancellation is like a dissolution of the contract. It disappears, no payout, no penalty. A temporary push in rank probably, I got 3 bookings within 24 hours.
I created a new listing and IB was pushed my way, but not forced on me. I had to confirm a few times that I understand how stupid of me to refuse it for that new listing.
