This is pretty brazen -- and, I would think, possibly illegal --- the city of Anaheim CA plans to shut off water and electricity to homes doing Airbnb renting illegally:

That's pretty extreme, and I hope it ends up being found illegal. Imagine if governments start simply shutting off the power to those doing anything at all that they don't like or approve of. Having a lemonade stand or garage sale without a permit? Power off. Lawnmowing before 8am and it bothers neighbors? Power down. Campaigning for Trump? Lights off. ANd so on. It's a dangerous precedent -- for governments to start with such tactics.

Part of the ordinance, which takes effect on August 11, requires the city government to deny electric and water utility service to any homeowners “who rent, offer to rent, or advertise for rent” space in their homes to individuals for fewer than 30 days. The Anaheim Public Utilities Department, a government agency, holds a monopoly on all the electricity and water services for consumers in the entire city.
