This Rapid City, South Dakota host really tried to do right by the city -- she went to get a business license, something that other hosts in the city didn't bother to do. Then instead of granting her a license, the city shut her down, while leaving all other Airbnb hosts in the city to continue to do business. Just goes to show, if you try to do right by your local government, you could end up getting punished for it.

Although her business is going well, with 166 guests so far and great reviews, Donna Gilbert has had some trouble. The City of Rapid City requires a business license for people who operate traditional bed and breakfasts. There are currently no specific regulations for internet or short term rentals.
"These are all the Airbnb users in rapid city that I presented to the council and said you need to address everybody besides me. I am the first and the last Airbnb host to apply for a license," said Gilbert.
She has been denied a business license even though she passed all of the city's regulations.
