Dear Senator Warren,
When you took on the corruption of the banks that caused the crisis I applauded you. What I would like for you to know now as you begin to look and see if Airbnb's are businesses, is that all Airbnb's are businesses! They are called boarding houses, and have a long venerable tradition in our country, Would you let 900 strangers sleep in your house this year like I did? Didn't think so. You see, doing Airbnb is not a scam, it is a job, you know those things you were upset got shipped to markets with lower labor costs?
I have enjoyed hearing your voice for the regular person against the big corporations, and I think on this subject you're woefully misinformed. The hotel industry and city governments are the big guns, Airbnb, highly valued as it is, is just a platform. What makes Airbnb is thousands and thousands of the little guys. Affordable housing has been a problem since long before Airbnb, so wouldn't it be better to let the hosts keep working and focus on better creating regulations and incentives to build affordable housing? A lot of people who host will not be able to find other jobs, much less anything comparable. More homelessness will ensue if you take away the ability to host. You really haven't thought this through.
You know, a lot of what I do is rent to people by the month who have no credit score, either because they are young, poor or international. Yes, I am a multiple listing host. I work 12 hours a day often. I don't get weekends off. When the situation gets dangerous, my "company" does not back me up. It is crazy to label me an undesirable. I think we used to be considered respectable way back when.
Respectfully,
House in the Hood

Deborah, It's a good moment todo so, before she gets too publicly invested in killing off hosting. I will admit you sending me the address was what made me commit to doing it. One less hurdle. I've got the stamps and envelopes.

Okay, I will do it tomorrow! Only 5 or 6 hours a day of working on advocacy for Airbnb hosts....I have to limit it.... can't do this work for 8 or 15 hours a day, even though sometimes it seems we need to...

Yes, Shaun, send it! I really agreed with all you said. It IS a job, at least for many of us. I don't know since when people are so down on other people renting as a 'business', as if it was a dirty word. Deborah, I applaud your commitment in this non-paid voluntary work that you are doing with this forum and formerly the Airbnb's NHF. I thank you everyday for that.
