community.airbnb.com/t5/Hosts/New-York-State-30-Day-Rental-Minimum-amp-enforcement/m-p/129204#M35763I am a host in Long Beach, NY. -- a beach town 27 miles outside of Manhattan. Recently, the building department visited my house during a guest's stay. They interrogated my guest and determined they were renting through Airbnb, for less than 30 days (reservation was for 3 days) & they issued me a summons for running an "Illegal hotel." Court date is July 13th. They came back on Saturday night when I was there. (I live there and I am there often). They said the were "going door to door" using the maps on Airbnb & Homeway to "shut down" all listings under 30 days. In addition, I am concerned about the new NYS law which will make it "illegal" to post an ad on internet for a rental of less than 30 days. Is anyone seeing this level of enforcement? What is your strategy to manage the posting should the Gov sign the new restrictive law?

Good God!!! This is happening in the USA??!?!? Like you said, Lambada, is "US = China" ! Or more aply, "US = North Korea" I have never seen such extremely aggressive building department enforcement, really of anything whatsoever. It's appalling. It's been my understanding that the building dept cannot just force their way into people's homes. I mean, for God's sakes, even POLICE do not have the right to do what this building department apparently did -- which is essentially to conduct a search without a warrant. To interrogate someone without court documents. Guests do NOT have to talk to such thugs and hoods!! Hosts should tell the guest to call the police if something like that happens again. There are laws in this country, and freedoms and rights, and our government has to respect the rule of law. I hate to involve the legal system in anything, but perhaps it's time for the citizens of Long Beach to file suit against their government.
