British residents who rent out their spare rooms through Airbnb could soon find their details handed to HMRC, experts warn, after the company has been forced to share data about its Irish users with the tax authorities in Ireland.
In April online sellers who use Ebay, holiday letting websites and other internet retailers were told they face one of the "biggest tax crackdowns in history" under government plans to obtain data details of millions of online transactions.
Sean Wakeman, tax investigations partner at Crowe Clark Whitehill, said: “It is inconceivable that when HMRC can demand information from the likes of Amazon and Ebay that it will not seek to exploit the relatively low hanging fruit of Airbnb.
