Just lately, I have been getting tips from guests! One left me $3 in quarters, in three separate stacks they were from Oregon so it wasn't getting rid of foreign change), someone who works for a liqueur company left a bottle of expensive alcohol and a couple of guests have left spare bottles of small brew ales. Though the ales are probably because it isn't possible to fly with them, I was surprisingly tickled by the cash tip! First time in 2 years!
Do other hosts get little deliberate treats from guests?
Happy Summer Hosting! Bridget

I got a funny gift today: nicely wrapped and ribboned, the size of a gift card but twice as high. Some cartoon caracters. They are teabags with members of the Swedish royal family in cartoon shapes. When you hang the bag in a cup, the princes and princesses will float over the cup, holding on with their outstretched arms. They look funny. I remarked that I'm glad she is not English, as the Queen looking sternly or Charles melancholically over my breakfast teacup would be less nice. And it's a funny idea to soak your Royals in hot water.

I have gotten a few presents over the years -- several times, like you Bridget, I have been the recipient of "spare change" -- sometimes a lot of it. Like a half a cup of spare change.
I've also been given: a potted orchid, a small potted rose plant, a Book of Mormon with a Godiva chocolate bar laid across the top (that was a very nice juxtaposition), a couple books, a couple cards....and then of course many "accidental" gifts comprised of partly used bottles of shampoo or tubes of toothpaste, and a couple phone charger cords.

I have had many guests surprise and delight me with such sweet considerate gestures over the years - always welcomed, never expected. Everything from delicious treats, teas, wines, confections to home made or indigenous items that are beautiful and useful. Even got a new toilet seat once, installed by the guest himself. Have had several occasions of generous cash tips at the end of the stay from those who valued my very personalized extra touches as a chef. Also had services given to me for free by an engineer and a construction guy, all totally volunteered. Also a slightly inappropriate gift of an enormous flower arrangement by someone who was a tad confused about my role as a host. That was awkward. People have been wonderful and nurturing to me and I am always touched and grateful. One of the very valued perks of the gig.

I've had fun things over the years and the best was a beautiful boxed gift set of L'Occitane products from someone who worked for them. Today some guests checked out and they left a fridge full, making my cleaner very happy. Cherries, grapes, a whole watermelon, a couple of pounds of brussel sprouts and a few Asahi beers. A very interesting mix! They were also interesting guests. The lady at the downstairs shop told me the man wore a utility kilt (which I keep hoping my husband will wear one day) and then one day showed up in the store in tight leggings, that as she said "showed he was a man" HA!
