Towels
How do you determine how many towels to give guests who stay longer than 2 days? If you are trying to conserve water and save money.

2 as in wash cloth and bath towel? Or two of each?

2 sets/ (towel, hand towel, washcloth) guests used wash cloths more than the hand towels // I currently have 4 adults staying in my place and I provide them 2 sets of towels for each. And will be staying for 7 days.

So you provide two hand towels? I just have one hanging in the bathroom. I always assumed that was enough for two. I offer two bath towels for the woman one for hair and body.

For ladies I provide 1 x flannel-washcloth, 1 x hand towel, 1 x bath towel 1 x bath sheet. ( my reasoning is ladies like a bath towel to use for their hair especially if they have long hair) for gentlemen 1 x flannel-washcloth 1 x hand towel 1 x bath sheet. I am on site so 3 days or less I proceed a set per person and guests are welcome to ask me for more towels if required for weekly booking I provide 2 sets per guests. Even luxury hotels are environmentally conscious. I ask guests to leave used towels in the bottom of the shower or on the floor in the bathroom.

Hi Jennifer – I provide one bath towel per person per week, one hand towel, and a basket of about a dozen washcloths. There are also several inexpensive beach towels on the shelf. I also have a cute little bucket in the bathroom with a whimsical rhetorical question/idea about how to keep towels clean in order to save energy, water, and chemicals from going into our beloved Chesapeake Bay by drying first with the clean washcloth and putting used washcloths in the bucket.
My stays are usually pretty short and guests sometimes even leave towels untouched.

Hello Julie & Eric - I'd love to see that bucket and perhaps copy the whimsy. =) We too have that basket o'washcloths for guests.

My guests tend to stay for longer periods of time. At the end of each week I let them know that "today is laundry/cleaning" day and that I would be happy to change their sheets/clean their bedrooms/bathrooms but respect their privacy, so it is up to them. Surprisingly, most of them just request a towel change and that is all. Lucky for me much less work.

Smart idea. My guests usually stay one night to two. On occasion I get someone staying 4 days or more. I also notice not all my towels get used.

Remember that the more towels you provide, the more they will potentially use. I restrict them to a set plus a couple of extras.

I was just giving one hand towel for a couple and an extra towel for the female. I noticed the extra towel never got used. I'm just wondering if I should provide two hand towels for a couple?

My guests seem fine with one but one older couple took a clean white kitchen hand towel and used it in the bathroom. If you have a spot to put folded towels so guests have access to use them, but if they don't, it's still clean, that might be a win-win. Although one extra hand towel isn't that much extra laundry.

True. That's a good point. I just never thought about two hand towels. I hardly ever see two in a bathroom. I have mine folded and hanging nicely above the toilet on a rack. I could hang two.

We leave at least half a dozen bath towels in the bathroom at all times. Usually 4-6 in an industrial basket on a cabinet, four more hanging and two hand towels by the sink. There are extra towels and washcloths, six of each, in the cabinet. Very rarely do guests use more than four, total.
We keep a mesh basket hamper in the bathroom and ask that guests put their used towels there when they're done. Even our messiest, most difficult guests seem to find that pretty simple and straightforward.
I think we'd go through more towels if we put them on the bed for people to use, I notice I use more towels that way myself, when we travel.

We don't restrict anything. People set better limits on themselves when they are free to act under their own sense of responsibility. That's a basic rule I learned from my child development professor when I was training to be a preschool teacher and 90 per cent of the time, it works.
People feel confined by unreasonable restrictions and they tend to want to break them. We tell them - use it all, that's what it's here for.
We've only had one guest out of 30 really go overboard (and that was with cheese, not towels.)

A friend of mine who has been doing this learned from her mentor people like direction but not restrictions.

That's my approach too. Two bath sheets, three wash clothes, one hand towel, with paper towels too, laundry basket in the closet and three or four more in the cabinet if they need them. No one yet has pulled extra towels out. We usually have short term rentals (1-3 days) so maybe that's it but knowing extras are there is special too.

I let the guests decide, at first they get a big bath towel and a smaller one per person. If they want to get a fresh one, they are told to drop the used towel on the floor, if they don't do so, I put fresh ones after a week.

I love your place, Susan. We stock the fridge and cupboards too but we're not as upscale as you.

Thank you! What's interesting is most of our guests have commented on and enjoyed the "abundance" but none have taken unreasonable advantage. It's almost like the idea of having lots is as satisfying as actually using lots.

We don't change anything for them - there's a washer and dryer in the unit.
