Bed issue
A guest took issue that we asked them to strip the bed and put the towels and bedding in the bathtub, it makes it easier for the cleaners to know what is dirty. This is an apartment not a single room. We have rented before and never had this said to us in 15 years... Any suggestions?

We don't ask people to strip beds. We ask them to leave beds they've slept in unmade so we don't wash sheets that are unused.

What was the issue the guests had....did they feel it was too much work for them to strip the bed, and felt upset at being asked to do so?
If you don't mention this request in your house rules, it might be good to do so just so that people know what they are agreeing to, going into the reservation. Otherwise, I would say that if this only happened once in 15 years, just be thankful it is only once in 15 years, and let it go and tell the guests that if they don't want to do it then they don't have to, and let the cleaners know that they will need to strip the bed in this instance.

I don't ask them to strip the bed. However, I think that having them put the soiled linens in the tub is pretty smart. I would dismiss the one cranky response as it seems to be working well for you.

Another reason we don't ask them to strip the beds is that the cleaners just throw it all in a basket without making sure to count everything. We've had a few sheets go missing (I suspect that they were stained and people were ashamed) and it's always been when people strip the bed and wad up the sheets.

Professional cleaners certainly have the experience and the sense to know which linens and towels have been used, unless you happen to get the rare guest that makes their own bed to impeccable standards. So it might not be altogether necessary to ask the guest to strip the beds.
It's a very small thing to ask of them anyway, but the main reason I'd avoid doing it is that the last few minutes of a guest's stay are the freshest thing on their minds when they write their reviews and ratings.

Good point about the last thing on guest's mind when they leave a review, Andrew!

I can always tell if towels have been used-- when in doubt, wash them! I don't ask guests to strip the beds, because it takes me about 2 minutes & any problems or stains are easy to spot.

this is what I do as well, although when I stay in someone's home I strip the used beds and put all dirty linens in the tub.

I actually ask guests NOT to strip the beds or pull their towels. I prefer to clean and inspect myself. Plus, I don't think it's their job. I think part of the luxury of staying with me should be not having to do housework. All I ask is they they put used dishes in the dishwasher (or wash them if it is is use). The rest is my job!

Our house manual doesn't ask people to strip the beds but it does say "don't bother to make the bed" because it's getting stripped to clean the sheets anyhow. Thanks to this post know I know the reason some guests have left a pile of towels in the tub! I always thought it was weird.
I do ask guests to do their own dishes and bag their trash and leave it outside the apt, though. Because ants.

hotels don't ask guests to strip the beds, so why should you?

By the same token, hotels don't charge a cleaning fee, so why should you?
