Super Host
I at one time played Farmville, it was fun being super focused on a superficial thing.
But it grew boring and i quit .
I'm now of the opinion that Superhost is the equivilant of a Farmville Icon and i'm trying to quit obsessing .
The meter shifts back and forth from 80 to 72 with the review of a single guest who can neither read nor write or follow the directions in large caps on the wall.
My guess is these guest will assign stars not on Accuracy , Communication , Cleanliness , Value and Location but rather on traditional 5 Star Resort Criteria .
According to the criteria , a host could be spartan like and qualify as a Super Host and I think that is a good thing . Ten to one it will rarely happen .
The criteria may improve.
For the sake of Spartan Host as well as the others; all who represent their clean spaces accurately and respond to the guest inquiries promptly and honestly with manners and empathy should be acknowledged.
I still secretly want the icon for my staff and for myself and for the other host who deserve it but that is the FarmVille player in me who should grow up.
Host and guest alike both deserve good customer support and i've my fingers crossed that things will change , even if that only means my coming to grips with reality .
thanks john

OMG thanks for this post! I, too, need to let it go. I found it easily became a major distraction. The whole system is an external reward based system which I gave up on long ago. But it instantly brought me back to elementary school where children's behaviors are molded and manipulated with grades and gold stars. I didn't fall for it then and I can't fall for it now. But I did for a bit there. I was laser focused on getting that badge. I learned and did well in school because I LOVED learning and reading and writing. And I loved Airbnb because I got to meet new people and make money. I liked it because it was a win-win situation. But it's not a fancy hotel and I don't need to make myself look ridiculous jumping up and down like a crazy person shouting "ooo ooo pick me pick me" "like me like me!"
Seems my three month honeymoon phase has ended and now I'll see if I really love it or what my next move will be with my two extra units.

Thank you also Leigh Ann, I'm laughing now knowing i'm not the only one who wants/wanted the merit badge . I'm a dam good host and a single idiot can easily derail me with the number of bookings i do but its not going to make a bit of difference in the final analysis . You come here and stay sometime or I would dig walking around a river. I'm in an ocean world and miss the smell of trees . anyway thank you also for the "your not the only crazy one " comment , john

The super host is important because they will receive a 24 hour customer support phone number. I do not know how it might influence bookings relative to reviews , but i could see the mobile app filtering for 'superheats" in a particular area. In any case we are agreed it's not worth sweating and life's too short to worry over things outside of our control , rest in peace john and company

If you find it, please let us know. I asked a CX rep and he had no idea. "Dedicated SH support" was to be rolled out 11/1, but I can't find it. Maybe when I call it's tied to the phone number I enter in their system - oh well, I just hope it works when I *really* need it, which I never hope to happen.
Serafina
Serafina2 years ago
As of 11/1/14 Superhosts were supposed to receive priority support. That doesn't seem to have happened for many of the Superhosts here. Benefits are minimal: a badge, a $100 travel cert for maintaining status for a year, "priority" support, and sneak previews of new Airbnb products/services. Nice but certainly not much of a reward.

We had a host social early this week, and we were talking with Airbnb staff about the "badge." None of us were too concerned because we all said it would be hard for us to attain it because of "location." Unless you are coming to my neighborhood to do something local, I won't get 5 stars because people are comparing it to proximity to Manhattan or being in Manhattan. The other hosts agreed with me and the staff member was surprised to hear that feedback because I think Airbnb thinks that if you are a good host, you will automatically be a Superhost. I am a superhost according to my reviews; my location has nothing to do with what kind of host I am.
Airbnb also is not my profession, but a supplementary income endeavor to my full-time job so I don't have the same time or resources to make my place like a 5-star hotel with luxury amenities and me being at the guest's beck and call 24/7.

How would it be hard to be a SH due to "location?"
Serafina
Serafina2 years ago
I'm guessing that for some hosts, "location" might be a difficult category to score well in, despite the appeal of their space's amenities and the graciousness of the host. If your property's on the outskirts of more popular sites, you get people saying, "Man, the place was really cool and I liked the price, but it was so much harder to get to where I really needed to be than I wanted." Or perhaps a host lives in a neighborhood that some visitors find sketchy rather than vibrant.
Julie and Eric
Julie and Eric2 years ago
Sure - so how does that affect SH status?
Serafina
Serafina2 years ago
I suppose if a location is rated one star, it can bring down the overall star rating, which can lead to some hosts not making the threshold for Superhost. I read a preliminary study last week by researchers at the National Bureau of Economic Research and Airbnb that was really an interesting look at bias in online reviews. It stated that star ratings on Airbnb tend to be much higher than on Expedia, even after Airbnb tried to take away the possibility of retaliatory or reciprocal reviews through the new double-blind review system. They suggested that ratings are inflated by "socially induced reciprocity" when hosts and guests interact with each other and consequently omit negative feedback from reviews. They found the effect stronger in shared-space rentals rather than whole-house rentals where hosts and guests don't have as much interaction.
Julie and Eric
Julie and Eric2 years ago
Evidently guests can leave a host an overall rating in addition to the individual category ratings, and the SH status only uses the overall rating - I'll be able to tell you for sure next month after my third Airbnb stay. I believe the social reciprocity theory.
Christina
Christina2 years ago
As explained above, if you get rated lower on the location and everything else is a 5, it affects your supervisory rating. I meet all the other criteria (number of guests, responsiveness, commitment) but 71% on the criterion that includes location. My overall rating is 4.5. To be a supervisory, 9% more of my guests need to rate their experience a 5.
Julie and Eric
Julie and Eric2 years ago
Christina – it's my understanding that the 71% is the number of five star overall reviews you have received of all the overall reviews you have received. The individual categories do not count toward super host status.
So 29% of the reviews that count toward the super host status were four stars or less. Probably four stars.

Christina

I get the 29% is 4 or less but the most likely reason a guest would give an overall 5 star review is if you gave 5 in every category. I know they are separate rankings but if I gave someone less than a 5 in a category, I would average the ratings myself for the overall. Honestly i am the type of rated that does not give perfect scores unless the experience is mind blowing. Since it seems many hosts get insulted if their guests leave less than a 5, I have started to inflate my ratings of airbnb hosts, so yeah, I believe the social theory thing too.

SUPER HOST MATH
Lets pretend a host had 9 guest . All 9 will be queried to do a Star Review of their new best friend, me!
They have been put in the unenviable position of assigning value of the state and process of "the deal" based on Cleanliness, Check in , Value , Communication, Location and one more , what am i missing, Accuracy , right they all memorised "The More Details" section of the space description and " NO , there is no rice cooker in the unit, i'll get you one though"
Crazy D. , my new best friend has been in town a week and had his teeth pulled for a nickel and a dime , been scuba diving underwater, 3 times in a day for the first time in 8 years , scored a bag of marijuana from the same stranger at the door step, who "helped change 1K his money to the local currency " but now its time to go home with his bag of illegal seashells. Crazy D. is sporting a spanking new tattoo and he calls for a ride to the airport, ten bucks is all. I let him know we were able to get the ink out of the 300 thread count percale sheets and so and he won't have to come up with an extra 100 bucks but he should know the shells he was shopping , the one he called me about from the market are not worth taking a chance on , "your gifts could be contraband leave em here "
"No worries mate" having been underground for a month mining ore , had a pocket full of money and running shy, likes the tattoo, fixed his teeth and maybe met his soul mate. "Won't have time to clean the kitchen though ", reeks of seafood from the local market from the cook out sometime in the past. " Not a problem Dave, we can handle it, bakings soda and lemon, a guy is gonna knock on your door and get your stuff into the car we want as to put your butt on the plane , can you be ready" ? " Yep Matey , I"ll be ready"
I think twice and say "thanks Crazy D. , come back and visit Oi" I like the guy and why not, but reckless , had fun and has color and character but not a sustainable guest but "come back okay" i say wondering if i'm putting too much stress on my system.
My Super Host Status meter is running , i don't know yet what a Super Host is but this is a game and my meter keeps going up, "I may be doing something right"
I do the math, 9 guest x 6 stars = to 54 possible 5 stars. 72 percent x 54 possible stars , almost 40 five stars already. I figure Crazy D. and I like him is dyslexic, that the review will be a bit trying for him to get through. My goes to 76 percent and right it has to do with Cleanliness, Accuracy , Value, Check in, Location and what am i missing. , Communication . It's fun but Lord keep me from doing my thing for the merit badge on one hand and I don't know if i want to keep it up on the other . Crazy D. is a fictional character from one side of a spectrum . I won't edit here and I want to keep it fun.

The sad thing is that if Crazy Dave gets caught smuggling his seashells and is sitting in some jail cell and misses the 14 day cut off for writing a review, you still get dinged since that non review drags the rest downin terms of superhost metrics. So really, you have no control for those impressions of the guests, even if you bent over backwards for a guest. Fictional character, Crazy D, must be based on some crazy guests you had indeed, or a mashup of all bad ones combined. What I read is that you grin and bare a lot and theblack of recognition for being so gracious can be really trying at times, especially when the ratings start dropping. I just won't worry about it.
Leah
Leah2 years ago
Darn space bar: the lack of recognition
Julie and Eric
Julie and Eric2 years ago
Hi John – I think the math may be a bit easier. If you have nine reviews, you have nine opportunities for five stars. The super host rating is based on the "overall" star rating that the guest gives you. It does not use the ratings for each individual category. At least, that is my understanding.
John and Company
John and Company 2 years ago
i edited the post Leah and began a new thread Fictional Crazy D didn't have a clue he might be taking out restricted stuff , he got it over the counter in a market and just didn't know . This is my way of understand what S.H. and realising its not something to stress. I'll have Fictional D. back as i'm taking him on as a project as he follows guidance well.

I don't think most guests care or know what Superhost is. These are the same people who don't read anything in your listing when they book. Crazy D. , my new best friend has been in town a week and had his teeth pulled for a nickel and a dime , been scuba diving underwater, 3 times in a day for the first time in 8 years , scored a bag of marijuana from the same stranger at the door step, who "helped change 1K his money to the local currency " but now its time to go home with his bag of illegal seashells. Crazy D. is sporting a spanking new tattoo and he calls for a ride to the airport, ten bucks is all.

Hi John – I think the math may be a bit easier. If you have nine reviews, you have nine opportunities for five stars. The super host rating is based on the "overall" star rating that the guest gives you. It does not use the ratings for each individual category. At least, that is my understanding.

i edited the post Leah and began a new thread Fictional Crazy D didn't have a clue he might be taking out restricted stuff , he got it over the counter in a market and just didn't know . This is my way of understand what S.H. and realising its not something to stress. I'll have Fictional D. back as i'm taking him on as a project as he follows guidance well.

So I was lucky that one of my guests brought his own Rice cooker when I had to state that I did not have one.... Maybe that was the reason why he rated 4 star only.... That is fate...

Hello Eric , i actually gave up Super Host , like I kicked Duncan Doughnuts , my understanding is 5 Stars are the only thing that counts ( which is different than the number of stars below your unit which is cumulative , but i swear i'm over it , lets have a meeting ( BEING A SUPER HOST MIGHT LIKE TRYING TO REPEAT HOME COMING KING/QUEEN EACH SEMESTER WHILE CONTINUING TO GET FAT) its a drug i don't want to get on

But my point is as some of the other commenters make is they are not rating us on the criteria at hand anyway , The truth is the reason i would want the Super Host thing is so that i could develop a large pool of easy guest that are my friends, thus making my life more simple

I don't think most guests care or know what Superhost is. These are the same people who don't read anything in your listing when they book. I congratulate those hosts who are Superhost because clearly their guests are getting a great experience. I just think guests who stay with me still get a good experience and a great value. I'm more Holiday Inn than Four Seasons but the traveling world needs both.

Agreed – I don't consider us Four Seasons at all. I credit our SuperGuests.

Have Super Host status for what it is worth and honestly guests are still interested in only one thing, COST. No guest has mentioned or seemed to notice, when booking. And once you have it, you think all the time....wonder if this can be maintained. ha, ha. Be careful what you wish for ?
