Money may not grow don't grow on trees (but umbrellas do)
I have an umbrella stand on which I placed a couple of cheap little umbrellas for guests to take out if it is raining. Six months on, there has been a steady growth in the number of these items; they are so inexpensive I don't run after trying to find who left them behind (and I have stopped chasing after phone chargers too) I have now reached a dozen umbrellas where once there were two. Do other people put out umbrellas for their guests?
What is the most unusual item left behind? I had a German visitor who left me a clothes iron (what was he doing taking an iron on holiday?).

yes, I leave out umbrellas as well, Peter. They usually break them. Some disappear, then new ones appear ... I never chase my guests for anything they leave behind. Some remember and ask me if I can mail it to them - the last one forgot a Kindle and I am mailing it now to the States. They always offer to reimburse me but I've declined so far. Just seems like a hassle though it probably would be wiser to start charging for mailing items

Whenever I lend out umbrellas, the guests take my good ones and leave behind the cheap £2 ones they've purchased on the street

I've had trousers, which I sent on to France at huge expense but which were returned a month later. Doubt if I'll sent anything on again - or at least not until paid for up front.
I also found a packet of antidepressants and a bank card reader stuffed right at the back of the wardrobe behind a shelf. It is not an area I previously checked after each guest so I have no way of knowing who they belong to . I did ask the two or three most likely guests but no-one claimed either item.

Yes I have an umbrella stand and guests are welcome to borrow. We also have beach towels available but have had guests leave their own behind.

One guest left a bunch of twenty pound notes under a map. I met her for coffee a couple of days later and gave it back to her. She hadn't remembered even having the money there. I've got some umbrellas near the front door and usually lend ones that I don't mind losing.

I had one of my first guests leave, erm, his wedding ring on top of the bookshelf.....I noticed it and messaged him and oh was there a panic about getting it back in a hurry at his intermediate stop before he reached 'home'

A Saudi family left me a couple of hijab and books calling Christians to convert to Islam and why Jesus was really a Muslim.... They had drank a huge bottle of Amaretto an Italian guest has left and hid it behind the microwave... They also left some parts of an oven which has been burnt .... Should I had reported them to the MI6?

Do you think so? I found it amusing and a little creepy too, Cryn, I must admit but not that scary. I put on the hijab to see how it was and laughed at their hypocrisy of drinking quite a lot of alcohol and eating all the bacon I had left at the back of my freezer! Christ was born more than 600 years before Muhammad and doubt it he knew about the Quran although they claim it was created since time immemorial...

It's the burnt oven parts which I found disturbing - what possible reason could they have for carrying such things around?
The rest - oh yes - human frailty comes in all shapes and sizes.
How did the hijab make you feel?

I think the oven came from a previous place they stay. I noticed they eat a lot of seeds which they roast. I spent a lot of time cleaning the house after they left... Wearing it, felt as if I was going to a Halloween party. I should have left the house with it and see how really felt wearing such in public places.

Maybe I should wear it in the next Airbnb host party
