House Was Robbed...
I was really suspicious of the guest, 1 person in a 5 bedroom house it just seemed odd. Also I could never reach them on the registered number. They called me on a different number. Called the number back and the lady said that she had loaned her phone to someone else.
I will keep you all posted on the details. I will go and file a police report later today. They even took my brand new shower heads and towels.
Funny I was supposed to be interviewed by the L.A. Weekly next week. Great Timing.

I also point out AirBnBs somewhat new privacy policy as they enter they building an my apartment that we have to advise of filming. As they enter there are operational video cameras right outside my apartment and the hallway for YOUR safety and MY security. I live in an apartment complex, right in the middle of what's known as Melbournes legal district. I inform them of how safe the area is... A Queens Council lawyer down the hallway, a defence solicitor (attorney) John next door and two police officers above upstairs. I mention this of course you n my orientation to alert them to how safe things are! Then once they drop their bags and before I start with the inside orientation I ask to view their ID. I did couch surfing for 6 years before AirBnB so I'm a big believer in trust but also in safety first. Not a single guest has objected. If they did I would say, this is what I need to feel comfortable and safe.

Very sorry to hear this has happened! Please keep us up to date regarding how Airbnb handles the matter. We get very few stories about successful uses of the Host Guarantee here, and your situation certainly applies - I'm quite curious about how much they cooperate with police and how fast they are to compensate you. In the meantime, of course you'll want to do an exhaustively thorough search for all missing items, and please change your locks immediately - no way to know whether the thief copied your key!
Here's hoping they are successfully apprehended and you get things back to normal soon.

They want receipts on everything. So We've been Scrambling to dig up all the receipts. Luckily we had most of our receipts for tax purposes, but some things we bought on Craigslist so we don't have receipts for. Police were not really much help so far. I'll keep you all posted. We've had 2 guests check in since then, but we reported the robbery before they checked in. If we would not have called in and reported the claim, we might have missed our right to file a damage deposit claim. I still don't know if we are out of the woods yet. Since we allowed the thiefs in the crime was filed as a Grand Theft, not a Burglary. Anything under $940 is considered petty theft.

Wow, most of the most valuable things in our house do not have receipts. Please let us know if Airbnb reimburses you for items that don't have receipts. We are superhosts and that would put a serious ding in our confidence hosting since a million dollar insurance policy that you can't use is worth nothing.

It would probably be important to take an inventory of the items and list as much detail about them as possible. I have photos of all my belongings but have been slack about details (make, model, etc.). I can find receipts for a lot of things I buy online in my email.

1 more recommendation I have to hosts, is change out your locks regularly or go digital locks which can be changed after each guest. Guest's can make copies of your keys, and come back later and rob you blind. These thiefs stole the keys also. So I'm changing out all locks. If I had digital, I could just Chang the Code.

I have 3 locks: 1 Digital, 1 Obscure Yale style (but it's not a Yale) and 1 Chubb deadlock.
Guests are never given the deadlock key, so anyone copying the Yale type key ( assuming they find the one locksmith in the whole of Dublin who holds the blanks for the obscure Yale type lock), they can still never get back in. I feel totally confident and secure in this simple arrangement.

However, I and two of my friends have been our own detectives and if we had the right to do certain things we'd have a closure by now, I think. I will tell more about this later. Now, only one thing, as a result of our own action we provoked for this to happen: yesterday morning I received a call from a police officer who told me that he had the keys from my house. We are installing security cameras very soon. I advise all of you to do the same, too. It's a better investment than any improvement you've been planning to do on your listed property. I would put it in the living room and in front of the house. This way you know how many people actually stay verses the people booked and what is coming in and out of the house. If We had it installed we would have seen the faces of the thieves and would have seen them carrying out the TV AC's etc...
I met with the investigating officer, he has an informant.
There is a group of players who do just that, book houses, from Redondo to LA and around, go in and steel. They use stolen cards and ID's.
Meeting the guests in person is important when possible and definitely installing security cameras.
Ones this is taken care of we can go on with taking care of the regular business.
Will keep you posted.

this scenario is SO EASY to do again and again and again. airbnb probably has no fraud protection program in effect to effectively weed out fraudulent identities. the offline ID verification won't do for that if the identities and documents are stolen but are real. all those who rent out accommodations who are not onsite to meet/greet/supervise are subject to this type of situation, surveillance cameras or not. so much for the "trusting sharing economy" it's more like mi casa es su casa whilel you're carting out my possessions out the front door...

I was a guest at an airbnb in Calgary where the host had a camera set up with a view of the entry and kitchen. He pointed it out to me and said that he had it since many people had had his house key and he wanted to keep an eye on the place when he was out of town. He said I could unplug it while I was there, but plug it back in when I left and leave the house key in camera view, which I did. It was ok, not creepy or anything. Still, I won't stay there again. as a guest

So sorry to hear about your situation. I had a robbery at my home -stuff stolen from a backyard storage shed- unrelated to my airbnb apt (which is in the basement of my home-with access to the rest of the house). Even though they didn't get in the house it was quite unsettling for many months after. I am curious if you had any trouble with your homeowner's insurance getting the claim paid and if AirBNB was actually helpful and paid for your losses. Just curious if you have any kind of special B and B coverage on your place? I have an umbrella policy, but starting to wonder if I need something else.

Hi Rachel... I took pictures of everything. Also a couple of days before that the AirBnb photographer had just been at the house, so we had those photos to present as evidence also. But to answer your question directly AirBnb insurance paid us very quickly. The police are still investigating... Lol. I did not file a claim with my homeowners insurance. I do not have any special Vacation Rental insurance. I am looking to get some renters insurance though. Also I just got security camera's installed. Also report the claim quickly, we reported the claim as soon as we found out, we also kept our receipts. AirBnb stepped up and took care of us.
