Guests showering serveral times a day?!
Hello guys,
I'm fairly new to Airbnb, I joined in February but started receiving guests in August. While I've loved being a host and had very little not perfect experiences the thing that has "annoyed" (for a lack of a better word) me the most is the number of time a guest showers in a day. Yes, we live in Cancun, yes, it is sometimes extremely hot. But guests have A/C AND we have a pool where they can cool down. I've had guests that shower between 3 and 5 times A DAY. Water is cheap but, specially in Mexico, a very limited resource since most houses and areas do not reuse water or have wells that fill up with rain water.
Would I look like a cheap-o or weirdo if I place a little sign that says something along the line of "In this house we care about the environment, that is why your towels/bedsheets while be washed until you leave (or once a week for longer stays). And if you're about to take your second (or third or fourth!) shower in the day: please consider cooling down in the pool"
What do you think? Have you guys had a similar experience? (Specially hosts that rent out guestrooms and not the entire flat/house/boat/cabin/etc)

I think it would be perfectly acceptable and reasonable to ask guests to shower no more than once a day.
Do you know why guests are taking so many daily showers? Have you asked, for instance, to get more info on this phenomenon? I am not a swimmer and very rarely use a public (or private!) pool, but I have noticed on those rare occaisions when I have gone to a public pool, that sometimes there are signs at the pool asking people to shower before going into the pool. As well, some people may like to shower AFTER going into a pool ( perhaps in order to remove chlorine? I don't know...). So, I am just guessing, but wondering if maybe use of the pool could ironically induce more showering than if there were not a pool to use.
Since I am located in an area experiencing a drought, I would ask my guests to take only one shower a day if I found someone regularly showering more than once. I have not noticed anyone doing this in my home...but I am sure it could happen from time to time with some guests.

Hello Deborah, I have not though of asking because I'm afraid it would make me look like a weird lady seeing how many times they shower. Our bedroom is right above the guest bathroom so we can hear perfectly every time they shower but I don't know if they would make them feel uncomfortable is I asked "hey, why did you shower 4 times yesterday?". I dunno...

Four times a day is definitely a lot, but on the other hand, I for one always rinse off in the shower (and wash my hair) after coming out of a swimming pool.

People will do different things that we don't consider normal. How long is the guest going to stay? Is he the only person that does multiple showers? I have guests taking more than one shower. Once when they get up for their day and once when they return to go back out for dinner or a play or to go to bed. I can't fault them and tell them only take one shower because you're hot and sweaty and want to cool off.
I do understand if they're taking 4-5 showers a day, are they even doing anything besides being in the bathroom?

Hello Evelyn, the thing is that it's not this one guest. My actual guest checked in today and he's showering before going out for some drinks and a night on the town. The thing is, that out of all my previous 7 guests most of them (like 5 seriously) showered at least 3 times a day. Granted, it was a very hot summer in Cancun, out of the charts hot, but still, they all had A/C in their room and a pool to cool off...

3-5 showers a day would be pretty odd for people at home, but actually it's not all that unusual for first-world vacationers in tropical destinations. They shower before the pool out of habit. They shower after the pool to get the chlorine out of their hair. They shower after the beach to remove the sand. They shower in the morning to wake up, and in the afternoon to clean up after a hot sweaty day of sightseeing, perhaps in the evening to freshen up for a night out on the town, and at night to cool off before going to bed (which might be preferable to late-night skinny dipping in your pool).
I certainly appreciate that it's wasteful and bad for the environment (though less so than, say, flying to Cancun for the weekend), so I'd encourage you to remind guests that water is a limited resource and ask them to limit their showers to x minutes at a time (3 showers of 5 minutes each is still less wasteful than one 20-minute shower). Other than that, though, I think it would be unpleasantly intrusive to mention. The multiple shower thing is a normal and predictable consequence of hosting holidaymakers instead of renting to long-term tenants, whose daily routines would more closely resemble yours.

When we are on vacation at the beach, we have more showers than usual because we are involved in different activities that cause the need to shower - i.e. sand, salt, increased exercise, humidity, then going out in the evening to public places (instead of staying home and not having to worry about your appearance so much). A note reminding guests to be conservative in water use is a great idea - we all need to be mindful of that and just take short showers when we shower.

During the summer months in London my husband with shower just as many times because he sweats a lot and gets hot. As Andrew says, people consider washing at twice a day as normal.
