Hello from Arizona! + Superbowl 2015
Hi everyone, I am new to being an airbnb host- I've been on the fence for almost 2 years. What got me over the fence is that the Superbowl is in Phoenix this year and I also came to realize that my home is an asset and I need to exploit it and also give people the chance to experience beautiful Arizona.
For the Superbowl, homes are going for 3-20k a night. Single beds are listing for 1-1500$ a night. Outrageous.
Has anyone had any experience with large events like this and care to share their stories? I live right next to the university and there is always something going on, ironman, pf changs, other races, arts and crafts fairs. There is always a reason to be in the area but I've never been through a Superbowl season...
Any insight on what to expect would be great!

I see that your listing is also priced at 10x your normal rate during the week of the Super Bowl, but a search for listings in Phoenix for a party of 6 that week also turns up a lot of properties at normal prices in the $100-200 range (which will probably get booked up pretty soon).
I don't have any experience with charging such a high markup for special events - 300% for New Years Eve is about the most I can get away with. But I guess my biggest concern would be what a group of football fans spending over $2000 a night might think *they* could get away with in the house.
If I were new to hosting, what I'd do is block off the Super Bowl dates for now, and get some hosting experience under your belt over the next couple of months. You'll soon learn what works and what needs improvement, and more importantly you'll have a better feel for what kind of inquiries lead to positive experiences and which ones are better avoided. By the time January rolls around, and nearly every bed in town is sold out, you can unlock those dates, get a small deluge of requests, and pick the one that inspires the most confidence.

Good approach.
Yes- there are quite a lot of people that I know are doing the same thing. They are either fixing up their houses, or keeping the listing closed for that time until the very end. Many of them also haven't priced their home for the superbowl yet but have it listed the same as any other normal weekend.
Originally we were thinking of just doing superbowl, but we decided to get some experience beforehand and within an hour we had several inquiries, one for this weekend actually. We are right next to the university so high prices for football games. For me, football is nothing special, but it's amazing at the prices!
I am hoping to be selective for choosing who I would let stay in the house. I certainly don't want them to think that because they are spending 2k a night that they can trash the home. That would kill me!

We had Superbowl 2014 about two miles from me, and it was a complete BUST for Airbnb hosts. Take the size of the venue, and then remove all the capacity that you think will be taken by locals, or people who will drive in and drive out same day. What's left? Let's say it's 50,000 people. THat's not a massive huge amount, and most of them will be hotel people, as they want to party hard, meet friends at bars, etc etc. We had one Superbowl Booking, and it was a friend of someone or other who booked one place upstairs for the nanny and kids, and the other place downstairs for him and his pals. It was a godsend to get his booking as it was a deadly slow period.
So my personal experience, and from talking to many local hosts about it, was that Superbowl was a minor blip in our Airbnb booking life. I had dreams of getting piles of money!!! We saw so many listings on Craigslist and everyone was in same boat, no bookings.
