Eau de Dogue or air freshener? I just can't win!
Some of you may remember the review comment regarding Eau de Dogue. Well after using carpet fresh and placing a air freshener in the room, now I get a comment that the smell of air freshener was a bit overpowering. I just cannot win!!! But, on a general note, it appears that Guests are very aware of smells, sounds and so forth. Yeech.

My dog is a guide dog 'reject'. She is a inside dog and seriously has no noticeable odour, everyone comments on it. The guide dog organisation we got her from switched their food over a few years back. They had major sponsorship with a dried pet food manufacturer but their dogs kept getting sick. So they developed their own food. It's a frozen raw food. It just has meat, bones, few veggies and NO Grain. It was a big thing for them as they had to give up the sponsorship but it saved them a fortune in vet bills and their dogs perform better. Have a look at 'leading Raw'. Maybe you could find a similar product over there. It's worth a try. I don't even bath her because she doesn't need it.

Yes, the crappier the dog food the worse they smell. I've got them on the best dry food one can get (Lotus) which is in high regard. I even went so far as to wipe down the dogs with pet wipes. They really do not smell and they're not outdoor dogs either. The initial dog comment was 3 guest prior, now the latest comment is that the air freshener is overpowering (and no comment about the dogs)....

What a pain! Really see if you can get them off grains though.

Awww, Susan. I know this is frustrating because you work so hard. I am not a dog owner and can't offer any grooming advice. I can just say, as a fellow host, "Hang in there!" You have hosted a lot of guests. Statistically speaking, you are bound to have some who are unhappy. As you have noted, those without pets are more likely to notice their fragrance. And I did find a Wiki-How article on "How to Get your House to Not Smell Like Your Pets". It has lots of suggestions for natural odor remedies and suggestions about caring for the space where the pets live and items that they use. Just do your best and then relax.

Have professionals come in and steam clean your carpet once or twice a year. They use an enzyme to kill dog smell.
Or only host people with dogs.

Susan, after your last post about the doggie odor, I went out and bought doggie wipes and thought they smelled too "fragrancy". I only used them a couple of times. I'm going to stick to using my usual baking soda on the carpets and Mrs. Meyers lavendar floor cleaner. I was doing a little research and came across something called Palo Santo sticks. They are used like incense and I heard they are great at removing odors. Have you ever heard of them or tried them?

Hi Susan - I recently had a guest bring two large dogs - she said she gave them baths and while I watched them (during a separation anxiety attack by one when the humans went to dinner) I didn't notice they smelled, but the apartment sure did when they left. I mentioned in my private comments that I was changing the weight limit to 40 pounds and she asked why, so I told her - it was the dog smell (and a few other normal large dog issues). It's a better size for a small space anyway.
It took two weeks for the smell to completely go away and I had vacuumed, wiped down, deep cleaned, and washed everything multiple times.
She mentioned it was probably the beds - they weren't washed before she came.

Well, with the recent guest it was all about the air freshener and not about the dog smell. She had a dog herself. I think I went overboard in the carpet fresh/glade plugin freshener activity due to previous two comments re dog smell. Anyway, 75 reviews in the past 3 years did not mention the dog smell. So, I have cleaned them, their beds, used carpet fresh, and air freshener as well. I quit smoking 4 yers ago so my nose really works, and my pets

We have dogs so I bought a Bissell carpet cleaner even though between us we both have hard floors and a single area rug. I do the rugs every couple of months, plus the upholstered furniture and it really helps

We love dogs! But have had some sub-stellar dog owners, so I'm just about to not allow them at all- due to this issue and the ones created when guests leave a dog who barks for hours (sorry neighbors!!) when it is left unattended, even though we clearly write and state they MUST take the dog when they go out. Ahhhh pets, love em but not the owners so much sometimes.
