I just opened a random listing and saw this:
100% Refundable
Cancel up to 24 hours before your trip and receive a full refund, including service fees.
And of course no one told us of this feature. And since my cancellation policy is Strict, does it mean Airbnb will pay my 50% cost?

I am looking at various listings, I'm not finding the same thing. Maybe it's rolling out slowly. There have been so many bizarre changes lately, I don't get how it's not ok to just communicate those changes...

That's bizzare. Maybe they add a cancellation insurance? I checked a new listing for someone on a forum, she sees it as pending, I could book and would get 22 Eutos promo with no indication why, only a text You get a promo, have fun!

I asked several times CS, @airbnb_fr, @airbnbhelp and had no answer. They even reply I was wrong and was not possible. I went to US FB and get one: this new feature is just another test only available for some profiles (I guess usual airbnb users as both guest and host side). It's not written in any policy and just kept in their 'informatical system.
Aparently they just moved all twitter and FB management to Ireland and it's another mess since 2 days.

They tried this last year - letting guests cancel with no penalty. It vanished within a few days.

I think this feature is actually not new -- you mentioned trafalgar that you saw it last year -- that was when this came out, and there were a few discussions we hosts had about it then. I have not seen the issue raised since then. I am imagining that one of the reasons for this feature of being able to get a full refund w/in 24 hrs, (and as far as I was aware it applied to all listings, regardless of one's cancellation policy) was that sometimes a guest would book a place in error, and try right away to cancel the booking, and would end up furious if they were told that even if it was in error, they would not get a full refund. Hence the 24 hr window to cancel, so that bookings made in error or one that one instantly regrets, could be backed out of. The host would not get paid anything in such cases. Not all guests know about this, however, because I had a guest who booked last year, then changed his mind about 6 hrs later and cancelled the whole reservation. He asked me if he could get a refund, and I provided a refund via the resolution center, but not a full refund. I charged an administrative fee, as is my policy now to do on all bookings that are cancelled.

Hi Deborah, I whish you had great holidays! This is not about cancellation 24h after booking. It's a new policy just for some profiles: if I cancel a booking as a guest 24h before the beginning of the stay (flexible policy listing) or 5 days before (moderate policy listing) I will have a 100% refund (including airbnb free). It's like having VIP guest profiles.

Wow, VIP guest cancellation policy??? Can cancel 24 hr before arrival??? Sounds absolutely bonkers, terrible. I demand an equivalent host VIP status which allows me to have special privileges such as cancelling a guest's reservation 24 hrs before they are due to arrive, with no penalty, just because I feel like it.

I do not care for this - If my property is booked I will probably lose money if I have a last minute cancellation which will most likely be because the guest found a better deal or last minute hotel special.

I think the 100% refund might work in Airbnb's favor if a guest cancels 24 hours before arrival, and books at another airbnb listing. Airbnb will make the same, or close, fees from the guest plus establish some good will for the leniency of cancellation. The only person who loses in this deal is the first host. And why would airbnb be concerned about them? Airbnb is really catering to the guest and trying to make hosts a commodity.
