Is it just me? A man Instant Booked my room & he's the one coming, but told me in the thread that his brother paid for it. I can't seem to distinguish this from a 3rd party booking. The man says he designs sophisticated equipment around the country--but is penniless? Just seems like a red flag. Also a red flag that he seemed extraordinarily anxious to show acceptance of my rules. Just hinky. So I had a simple question: if there are damages, who will be responsible, stayer or payer? I thought it was a good question. The CX I got said how do I know who paid? I said, well he told me. She said, well, he might just have graduated & is not yet an experienced engineer...it might be a present from his mother...all this stuff. In my experience, people need a room, they have a good job, they book the room, they stay, they leave, all is good. I couldn't get the CX to focus on the question, so I kept escalating scenarios. What if he bashes a hole in my wall? Her answer, Why would he if blah blah. What if he steals something, who pays? Well, he's an honest person or he wouldn't have told you his brother was paying. So I finally said, Ok, he burns my house down Who pays? Well, the insurance company, she says, and says why do I assume he will? I FINALLY asked her, "Haven't you ever heard of guests trashing Airbnb houses before?" And she said "NOT REALLY!" Idk--is it just me? Ultimately, I'm accepting his res, but I'm still saying when I've had deals like this in the past, they've started out squirrely & ended squirrely too.

Questions being 1) am I nuts? & 2) do you think my question to the CX was a good one?

That is what I was thinking, CC. When did you go off your rocker? Yes, you are clearly temporarily insane. It is understandable. I have had several folks stay who someone else booked for. I am pretty sure the person whose credit card was used, said something like this. Hey, if you wreck the room and my card gets charged, I am going to take it out of your a$$.

Oh yeah. Forgot to mention 3rd red flag. His brother paid an outrageous sum of money without asking for a discount. That's why he's in like Flynn.

Don't worry, the brother read your exigencies on guests and paid for a last hope educational stay.

C C, First of all, the picture looks beautiful and all those beautiful flowers, wow ;-)))
I think this is one of those situations you talk to CS and in their little own lost minds, they tell you to deal with the situation yourself. That they've already collected their fees so " you go make it happen for all of us". It's a red flag to have some grown man getting a paid booking due to lack of funds. The only thing you'll have to do, to be extra cautious with such a guest and be present a bit more than leaving him alone. Hoping your presence will make him more of a ' sleep and go without drama or damages or theft" kinda guest. CS avoided your question being answered because they don't deal with third party issues and instead of her just saying " you are at risk taking on such a guy", Evasive is their second name. I'm surprise you didn't get the scripted response of " we always recommend hosts to try and solve any situations with guests by communicating first through our message system and see how to resolve it before we get involve. ( there is usually a pause)

Oh wait. CC. Really sorry to bring this one up. Do you remember when Airbnb had a couple so called "guests" rent for what was supposed to be for a day or two, and they ended up staying for months( I believe the term is "squatting"). In California the says that you cannot evict them if they've nowhere to go( bunch of bs).

CC, nice flowers ! Is every hill indicting a former guest who did not pay or did not run fast enough?
My sister paid a few flight tickets for me over time, I buy stuff for my family on Amazon and get it shipped there, sometimes even as a surprise (my mother would not take it otherwise) I regularly book flight and train tickets and hotels for my landlord. He has no card and we deduct it from the next rent. It would not panic me without other indicators of trouble.
As I see it, the person who pays accepts that her card is used for withdrawal of rent and further sums in accordance with the terms and after airbnb mediated. If the brother stole the card and used it without permission, that would be different, but if the brother paid himself, he has to stand up for him.

When my sister lived in Rumania, she even paid flight tickets for her friends, as otherwise they would not visit her there ;-)

Thanks, Aj & Helga! Would you believe those flowers mound up like that by themselves? How do they know how to do that? Helga, that does speak to the question, but I would still be interested in how a problem would actually be handled. I told the CX she seemed unconcerned, possibly because it's not her property at risk.

CC if they are not six feet under, they rise. - if you speak to CS, you need to get technical and speak legalese. Like "Tell me who is liable for damage, the renter or the payer or airbnb? As technically and by the terms I can't check with which card it was paid, I take it that it is your legal responsibility to check the card. Tell me, if the responsibility extends to further payments to which the tenter agreed by the terms, like for damage or if he accepts a payment request for extension of stay or postal fees for forgotten items. ... By your terms, could a card holder block further payments if the booker accepts them? ... If it's a grey zone and it slipped your control, would airbnb stand in if something happens or asked otherwise would host garanty and insurance still pay?"

Vote for DAVE. DAVE for president, he is gonna get me a new wall. CC I do not see any red flags here. I rented the place for 1500.00 this month for a week. The guy registered himself and 3 guests. I did not care who the guests were. I did speak to all my neighbors and tell them to call me if they saw anything, or heard anything crazy. It went off without a hitch. Crazy to think some people actually have mad money to spend. Not airbnb hosts.

Just got a booking for next Sunday, third visit of the same guest. At least the function works, even if it looks like a free week till then. Not even an electric Autolib car this week - they rent them by the hour, self service, size like a Smart car. I'm off to bed and will count lottery millions in my dreams.
