Extra fees option has been rolled out!!
Next
Just today, when I go to a message thread that I have with a guest with a booked reservation, I see that the open dialogue box at the top of the message thread now has an option to be used to either "reply to guest X" or "charge for an extra amenity" . So now we can add any charge to a reservation that we want to add -- say for using a bike, or a pet fee, or for using an extra bed in the room, or if the guest wants the heat at a higher than normal setting and by pre-agreement this is something host will charge for, etc. I notice that this option only appears on message threads with guests who have either current or future booked reservations, it doesn't appear if the guests' reservation is completed and they have departed, nor does it appear on message threads of guests who have only inquired and not yet booked.
I'm glad to see this option has finally appeared, which was being promised to us last November at the AIrbnb Open.

Nice! I'm wondering if this is only available to reservations made after a certain date. I'm looking at an upcoming reservation made 1/8/15 and don't see the option.

do you see the option on any of your reservations, current or future? I don't think that this applies only to reservations made after a certain date, as I have a reservation upcoming for March, that was made way back in October 2014, and it has the new option to add charges.
It might be that this new option is in "beta testing" as they call it, and that not all hosts have it yet. I would be interested to see who finds that they have it, and who doesn't.

I don't see it on any future reservations - don't have any current ones.

Then it does seem that this feature is just in betatesting now, and not everyone has it.....

I just looked, and I don't have it.

Must be a beta.. I don't see it either and I don't have it.. but it's a cool option for guests extra charges Thanks for sharing the info...

Then when you click on the "charge for a paid amenity" option it shows a box where the $ amount gets entered, and then next to that is a box for a description of the charge, and then below that you can type a message to the guest about the charge.

Do you know if airbnbs commission from the host is taken out of this extra charge?

No, I don't -- but I would assume so, since they take the commission out of the total of accomodations plus cleaning fee -- so the suggestion is that any extra fee, they will add to the total and take a commission out of it.

Ah I see, how lucrative for Airbnb. Commission on the accommodation I understand, the extra is just greedy. Now I can see why people are saying what they're saying on trust pilot 2.4% overall isn't good at all.

Ahman, I recently read that Airbnb as a company is worth billions. Can't remember the exact sum. They do give some money to charity (The Red Cross, I believe it was).

that's really good that airbnb give to charity. Sorry to sound a bit of a cynic but that's tax deductible in the UK. I still don't see how skimming off hosts cleaning fees etc is justifiable or reasonable. I don't charge a cleaning fee so that's why I didn't know that airbnb take their cut of that fee. Airbnb have become a bit of a machine and like all corporations PR (charity is what I'm referring to) is part and parcel of the machine. This is where all the die hard "airbnb is god and they saved my life" come out...

The is also a "manage trip charges" hyper link menu option on the right hand side of each reservation on the "your reservations page." I have added a fee via the message thread and it says a payout will occur 72 hours after check-in. Will keep you posted as to whether it works. There is no indication that it is subject to guest approval or not, but I imagine it is.

Apparently, you can manage these charges up to 72 hours after check-in, even if the guest has already checked out.
