Smells...
I had a guest check out early due to an unexplained smell. Perhaps paint (we painted 60 days ago). This same guest booked 5 nights originally at the Holiday. So I am doubtful I can recover the booking. Air bnb was gracious in telling me I was not obligated to release the guests, but I chose to rather than endure what might follow?
Of course, it is notable that these guests asked me for a discount, and what a fool I was to extend that to help with their "budget". Fuming. Sleepless in Chattanooga

CC would charge her grandmother. Holiday Inn would not give you a refund because your room smelled, funny? What did they say it smelled like? changes are they found somewhere cheaper. Sorry you were afraid to keep your money.

It's always okay for a guest to request a discount. They're not even really expecting it--just floating it out there. And you just politely say no.

If the guest cancels and leaves they wouldn't be able to leave a review. That happened to me...a guest got the flu & went home. Neither of us were able to leave a review until I asked Airbnb to allow us to, because I knew he'd leave me a good review. I hope they paid for the nights that they stayed? Or did you refund them the whole thing? If you honestly can't smell anything, and aren't even sure what they were smelling why refund them? You should've gone in there with another person and asked what it was they were smelling, both of you take a whiff and decide then.

Sometimes people use smells as pretext as it's not tangible and they imagine you will cave in for shame. I got that at the beginning several times, people had a couple crisis and then had to leave because the sheets smelled. One person washed my sheets with about 2/3 of a bottle of extremely parfumed washing liquid - Iit was an absence of smell which bothered her. For the rest it was pretext. I added unopened package of sheets to the cupboard and did not get the "smelly sheets" remark for 10 years. None opened the packages either.

I hope you get a replacement booking. Never refund. To get out of the situation, say you will refund, if you get a replacement. You don't want to be paid twice but you need to be paid once and they booked so nobody else could. If they cancel and the calendar is free, they might get a refund, if you find another guest. (After that guest's departure)

I agree with all these ladies and just wanted to add that a lot of new hosts refund as they are scared of a bad review. Also, since the guest cancelled, they can't review you anyway. I wish you knew this before you refunded them. Let's hope you get a replacement booking.
