This is the story on the "Nanny squatter"...not an Airbnb guest, but a nanny a family hired to care for their kids....they fired her and she refused to move out! Apparently they discover at that point that she is a "vexatious litigant" who has been involved in THREE DOZEN LAWSUITS!!
Looks like someone should have been vetted more carefully....eeek!

No way would I be hostage to a squatter. I'd rather be in court for throwing them out on their a@@! But these stories do serve to warn us to do the simple things to protect ourselves from squatters.
Here in CT, the factors that differentiate tenants from transients lodgers are:
1. length of stay;
2. existence of a lease or other “special contract for the room;”
3. receipt of mail;
4. access to cooking facilities;
5. degree of control over the space (such as whether the person has his or her own key);
6. whether the person has another residence; and
7. the extent to which the person has made the dwelling his or her home for the time being
I strongly suggest everyone know the rules in their location and protect themselves with verbiage in their House Rules and House Manual.

Same with me, Queenie. I would rather be in court for throwing/locking them out, than held hostage in my own home. And when I show up in court watch out because I have been around this block before, so I may be countersuing them for a whole laundry list of things such as harassment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, vandalism, destruction of property, breach of contract, slander, libel, interference with business, stalking, and anything else that happens to occur to me.

Deborah, your list was so long that I just starting laughing! It's obvious that these serial squatters pick on more passive hosts.

EXACTLY! I totally agree with u both. The first time I heard about the squatter in Cali, I thought to myself that there is absolutely no way that I would ever allow someone to do that to me in my own house! My blood boils just thinking about it.
That person would realize there was a BIG miscalculation in their plan immediately when they inform me that they are not leaving.....
BUT As a good Host, l always like to offer options to my guests & this situation would be no different.....
ME: "What do u mean you're not leaving? First, I laugh at them for making such a big mistake, then I give them their options: either walk down the stairs yourself or I will drag your a** out by your ear" The choice is yours!!
When I'm finished, I will happily whistle, skip and walk to the police station to spend the night in jail only after I removed them from the apt & knocked the sh** out of them for attempting such BS.
And you're right Queenie, it seems the hosts in the stories that I've heard are all very passive!
