The anti-Airbnb coalition that includes unions and affordable housing advocates is launching ads accusing the company of exploiting blacks to promote its business.
The 30-second ad — paid for by the Share Better coalition — will begin appearing on NY1 and on websites Thursday. It consists of snippets from the company’s recent City Council appearance to discuss a bill that would fine illegal hotel operators who use the site as much as $50,000.

“Your website portal, there are people who are not following the law,” City Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal (D-Upper West Side), the bill’s sponsor, tells Airbnb execs. Her words are followed by the text, “Does Airbnb care?”
It also features City Councilman Jumaane Williams, the chair of the Housing and Buildings committee, blasting the company.

The company repeatedly claims its business is good for middle-class New Yorkers because it helps them make money, and often features minorities in its ads.
“Airbnb is a deceiver and you’re using middle-class people, and you’re using black and Latino homeowners,” Williams said.

Share Better includes the Hotel Trades union, the activist group New York Communities for Change, and the labor-backed Working Families Party.
“Instead of attacking the middle class, Share Better should start sharing how much money big hotel companies are funneling through this front group because they want to continue to be able to gouge consumers,” a spokesman said of the ad campaign in a statement.
Share Better said it is not funded by the industry.

My three cents: if there's an angle from which to criticize Airbnb, someone will take it, even if one has to get into a pretty awkward position to view life from that angle. If Airbnb had ads with only Caucasian hosts, someone would cry "Racist". If the ads feature minorities, someone will cry, "Exploitation." So how about Airbnb ads with animated animal-based cartoon figures as hosts? OR would PETA then jump on the anti-AIrbnb bandwagon, crying foul that this was exploitation of animals?
