No smoking rule
Hi all, in my house rules I write that there is no smoking in my studio. This is again followed up very clearly in my manual when guests arrive as well as no smoking signs up in the studio. BUT I fail to understand why guests just ignore this as there is no way they could miss this. The last guests left a bunch of cigarette butts in my dustbin, causing my accommodation to stink and me having to scrub out the dustbin to get the smell out as I had new guests arriving. Not only does this make me mad (I know I should let it go because they were lovely guests otherwise and left the place spotless and nothing was damaged) but I'm not sure if I should mention this in my review of them, if I should mention it privately to them or just not say anything at all. It's not the first time it's happened and I know it's not the last. Any advice??
Fiona
I had guests do it to me & I contacted Airbnb for compensation & they accepted it because my guests broke the house rules. I got paid for the amount I put in for. It want much but Airbnb don't like it that guests break house rules. They asked for photos but I didn't have any as I just got rid of them but they still paid me. I will take pics next time I have any problems.

"I know I should let go because they were lovely guests" Really? REALLY??! No, they were not lovely, they broke a fundamental condition of their stay. I'm so sorry you've had to deal with the consequences of their thoughtlessness.
I have asthma, as does my daughter, and I can't stay anywhere where people smoke; as a host have committed to keep a smoke-free space for my guests, and in consideration of my health needs (I have to clean it after all) p. If I were you I would most certainly seek compensation, and please, please, please include their outrageous rule-breaking in your review. How else will we hosts know that our homes may be similarly damaged by them?
I now always require guests to state in their emails that they are non-smokers (smoking outside then returning to the flat with the smell all over their clothes, hair, hands is no good either) before I'll accept a booking. It is that important to me.

I don't even let them smoke outside, which is what our guests did. If they want to smoke they have to leave the premises. We did have a guest who wanted to smoke and I told them not on the property so they went just outside our front gate! My husband told them to move right off the whole property and they did, but some guests will try to push the limits and if we don't take a stand, then they will continue to push them at other hosts properties. I used to feel bad if I wrote an honest but not so good review and they wrote a good one about me, but I don't anymore as we need to think about our co-hosts as well.

Smokers will smoke anywhere. They are relentless. They say they will smoke outside, but when they want that one cigarette before they go to bed, or when they first get up - they will smoke in their room. I used to work in a hotel and the smokers would want smoke free rooms - Why? Because they said the smoker rooms stank. Then they would proceed to smoke in them. Go figure?

Thanks everyone for your comments. Cathy I will take your advice and confirm guests have read the rules and are non smokers BEFORE I accept the reservation. And again when I check them in, then I will again state the no smoking rule when they check in.

Did they smoke inside? Or did they not leave butts outside? Might have to be very specific. One host posted on here that the wifi password is "no smoking".

BTW "A"....I am curious. Have you been Hosting a long time? I looked at your listing - very nice. But, I wonder if it keeps all the "straight" non-mj smokers away? (I used to live in Grand Junction CO) but, unfortunately, that was before they passed the new law.
LOVE the password. That is a treasure!

Like you Carol, i had no smoking rule in m y house rule with while deposit forfieted if guest is found smoking. I also had it in my house manual and signs in the living and bathroom! In addition, in my first contact email, I reminded them again that my property is a non smoking property. Cross my fingers that it will not happen to me.
Cathy
I think it important to make the distinction between "no smoking" in and around the property, and welcoming NON-smokers" only. Honestly, my brother-in-law never smokes in his house, but because he does smoke, a lot, outside, the stench follows him in and lingers wherever he goes. I also agree with Rosanne that even those who promise to smoke only outside will sneak a cheeky fag - perhaps hanging out of a window if you're lucky! Good luck - and please review your guests honestly!

My rule is: no smoking in the studio or balcony. In the trash that they left inside the accommodation was an empty packet of Matlboro and many cigarette butts that I could smell as I walked in after they left. I will review the guest honestly as I believe it's best for us hosts to be honest. I also agree with the distinction between no smoking and non smokers. Smokers will try and have s sneaky cigarette and because I'm not there they think they will get away with it.

I'm just wondering if it might be possible that the guests smoked outside someplace where it is permitted (eg on the sidewalk in front of the house, or in the front yard or backyard), put their cigarette butts in a container, and then emptied those butts out into your trash can INSIDE the house later on. That might be an explanation for a way that it's possible that they actualy followed your rules but cigarette butts ended up in the house.
Since I have at times in my life embarassed myself by falsely accusing others of something, I try to think of all possible explanations for something before I make assumptions that someone did something they shouldn't have done.
