I had this guest inquire recently, call him Sam. Sam's profile states that he lives in a city 20 miles and about 20 minutes away from me. His inquiry states:
Hi,
I'm looking for a place to stay for this week possibly next week. Not all the way through, leaving for the weekend.
I was wondering if it would be possible to rent your place at a discount? $50 is bit much for me. My budget is $30/day but I could do slightly more than that if you can bring down your price too.
Sam
Leaving aside the question of why Sam is seeking to stay in a place 20 minutes away from where he lives --- who here has seen many places with a nightly price as low as $50? That's actually not my nightly price, it's only the nightly price for stays of a week or more. And it's a winter season discounted rate too.
So, given that $50 a night is already quite low -- what do you think of someone asking you to bring it down to $30 a night? Keep in mind, here, Sam wants a 40% discount on the WEEKLY rate for the room, but he is indicating he won't even be staying a whole week!
I replied asking why he is seeking a place to stay in the same area where he lives (Somewhat of a moot point since I had already decided this was as clear a decline as one may ever see) , and pointed out that my rates are already discounted, and that anyone wanting to be taken seriously by a host should not ask for a 40% discount.
Sam's reply as to why he was wanting to stay in the same area he lives -- he said he was looking for work and looking for a place to rent and doing a personal project with someone in my area.
My opinion -- Sam should be looking for what he says he is looking for -- a permanent residence. Not sending lowball offers to hosts.
