In a recent discussion on another group, I mentioned that when Brian, Nate and Joe founded Airbnb in 2008/2009, not only were short term rentals illegal in San Francisco, but it was a CRIME to do short term rentals. One of the other group members asserted that I didnt' know what the hell I was talking about, and was ignorant of the difference between civil and criminal law.
No, actually it's HE who didnt' know what he was talking about. It's rare, but there are a few cities (I found 3 in California, as listed below) where doing short term rentals in violation of the law is indeed classified as a CRIME. In these many cases listed below, engaging in short term rentals in violation of city law, is defined as a misdemeanor, which is a type of crime.

"The city imposes up to $15,000 in fees and misdemeanor charges on those whose rental listings are found on websites....“(The city) needs to iron out all these issues before they’re going to threaten people and pursue criminal charges,” Carey said. “It’s crazy to me.”
This is the document about the law in San Francisco:

Which contains this statement:
"Under the City’s law, it is a misdemeanor for an owner or tenant to unlawfully rent a unit as a short-term rental. "

"A misdemeanor (American English,[1] spelled misdemeanour in British English) is any "lesser" criminal act "
