The home sharing website Airbnb — in the midst of a nasty battle with New York regulators — this week launched new political clubs led by everyday New Yorkers who make a few extra bucks off the site and want officials to back off. The “Home Sharing Clubs” are for hosts who rent out their homes to connect with other hosts in their neighborhood, and advocate for the company to their elected officials. On Monday, several picketed outside Democratic Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal’s Upper West Side office to protest her bill, which would prohibit advertising illegal home shares in New York City. Let Airbnb be: Keep alive an in-demand lodging serviceAirbnb supporters say the law regulating home sharing — which bans most people in the city from renting out their apartments for less than 30 days — is too strict. Two- and three-family apartments are exempt from that law. Lee Thomas Jr, a host who rents out his two-family home legally in Ozone Park, Queens, said he is joining the club because he’s “concerned about our elected officials trying to paint hosts like me with a broad brush.” “I am not an illegal hotel. I don't want to be treated like some of the things that I have been hearing,” said Thomas, who initially rented out his spare apartment as a way to make extra cash when he had cancer.
