As we head out into the sunset....
If you haven't yet noticed, Airbnb changes a lot -- the website changes, the features change. Some of these changes are good, as they help hosts and add to our ability to run our listings easily and with more options. Other changes are not so great, such as the "infants stay for free" policy Airbnb briefly set up,

or the way that Airbnb actually began to override hosts' own minimum stay settings and block hosts from getting 1-2 day bookings more than a month in advance.

Of even greater concern, is the fact that Airbnb has now actually forced some hosts to have Instant Book, and is thus prohibiting hosts from screening their guests and deciding whom they want in their own homes! To completely remove control from hosts themselves over whom they choose to have in their own homes, presents a very grave concern to the host community. A good deal of the host education that I have personally spent hundreds and even thousands of hours doing on a volunteer basis for the worldwide host community, has been with the desire to help hosts learn how to screen guests. For AIrbnb to totally remove the host's ability to screen their guest, not only flies in the face of common sense, and sets up the potential for serious legal, ethical and host morale problems, but it disempowers and diminishes hosts and those who have worked to educate hosts, and shows disrespect for us and our own homes. I can only hope that this deeply problematic experiment comes to an end very soon.

Because most of the news from the host community will now be first posted on the AIrbnb Community Center rather than offsite hosts groups, (as most hosts will only know to use the CC), as we leave these old host groups and depart into the sunset, I think it will be beneficial for all of us to keep an eye on what is occuring in the larger host community and continue to dialogue about it. I will post whatever latest news I find out about on www.globalhostingforum.com so you can check in there or on the Airbnb Community Center itself to find updates.
