locks on interior doors or safes?
this question pertains to our property that is shared. Host on site.
Been thinking about putting locks on doors to guest rooms. My concern is less theft then claims of theft. Guest loses their smart phone while out and says they were robbed while in.
Been avoiding it cause 1) I don't want the place looking institutional. 2) can't afford keyless interior door locks and 3) don't want the hassle of key management
So, my alternative idea is safes in each room closet. bolt to the floor, digital code, can even be the same code as their keyless entry code. Large enough for a laptop.
so whether the guest uses the safe (or locks the door) or not, they, not I, am responsible.
thoughts? Experiences? Another idea I haven't thought of?
thanks, all! Keith

I have this on all bedroom doors in my house so there is a greater feeling of security on both the Guest and the Host side. When I travel, I always lock my passport, money and any other valuables in the safe as hotel employees have access to your room at any time and I've also heard of hotel rooms getting broken into. I would be more inclined to stay at a Host home that had this sense of security over one that didn't and I'm sure some other travelers feel the same way.

Wouldn't they take their smart phone out with them rather than leaving it locked in the safe?
If I were staying in a listing with other guests, I would want a lock on my door. Like a B&B.
I rarely use safes in hotels but can understand people trouble with a lot of cash or valuables, it might be an attractive feature.

You say you can't afford keyless door locks but want to put a safe in every room -- I don't see how a safe would be less expensive than a keyless door lock.
I found this keyless door lock online -- it is only $60 on Amazon.

Can you get a safe for $60 or less?
And the labor expense to bolt a safe to the floor seems greater than to just change a door lock --- I say this as a person who has 20 years experience as a home repair professional. (Not to mention causing damage to the floors by bolting things there...and other issues with objects bolted to the floor -- such as problems this poses to room rearrangement...)
As a guest, and also as a host, I would much prefer that the guest room doors can all be locked, as opposed to having a safe in each room. As a guest in a place where there were other guests, I just would feel much more secure knowing that no one even went into my room, as opposed to knowing that no one went into my safe. It isn't just security of valuables that locks on doors provide -- it is also privacy and protection from invasive people or unwelcome intrusion.
As a host, I just like the feeling of knowing that guests can lock their doors and that I can also lock those doors when no one is in there.
As a host, I would

...I would... opt for the locking doors. I do this at my house and I find key management no problem at all.

I have a lock in their room. Guests lock themselves out all the time, specially in the middle of the night when they go to the bathroom. I have a key for their room and have to show it to them. It's only one set of guests and me in the share space. I figure it makes them feel safe even thought I have the keys for that door.

Here is what I do: I have a safe that cost about $65. My policy is that if a guest wants to use it, they pay me the cost of the safe and I give them the ONLY keys. When they return the keys, they get the money back. If they lose the keys, they get to take the whole thing with them and I keep the money. That is my policy and I have yet to have anyone want to use it.

I resisted the idea of door locks for a long time, as we have a metal cabinets with locks in each room, but we just decided to install door locks. We keep a master key that opens all doors.

I love this group! Thank you all for your input. Helped me clarify my thinking immensely.
So I have installed locks on all guest doors. Am not 100% happy as the new hardware does not perfectly match the existing. But can keep looking for better matches.
Bought smart keyed Weiser knobs at the Habitat for Humanity Re-store. Contractor grade, new in box for $10 each. These places are wonderful for furniture appliances and construction material. Across Canada but I don't know if they are in other countries.
Cheap enough so that if I find a better solution down the road my investment is low.

Nice! I love our ReStore - I've never been able to find the locks I need there though. Maybe I need to go back...

I just bought an beautiful old 3/4 sized bed frame that my husband converted to fit a double bed - now I am getting set to set up a studio apartment in our house to list next year when my son goes to college. Such great stuff there sometimes.

Maybe I was lucky in my timing but they had an entire wall of hundreds of weiser locks and lock hardware and do-dahs. Could not match the exact finish, so will probably get a lecture from my designer/stager but oh well...
