I just noticed this on an Airbnb listing -- when I input dates to see the total price, the software shows what the "standard" price on the listing apparently is, and indicates the guest is getting a discount from standard. What do you think of this? (The last two are enlarged screen images which only show the section on the right side of the main listing page where guest enters dates)

I think this can be useful to hosts if their new price is lower than the competition. I don't see what good it will do if the reduced price is still higher than competitors or just brings you in line. That would just be proof to the guests that you were overpriced to begin with. Another 'improvement' by airbnb that we don't really need.

I am also hearing, regarding this crossed out price, that it may actually not be a price that the host ever really had for their listing. If this is true then this is going to be a monumental case of false advertising on the part of Airbnb.

I thought I would check this out and went to preview listings in my area. At first I didn't see anything when I was logged in so I decided to try incognito mode on chrome. My listing came up as you are describing: my normal price and my height of summer price with a line through. (I've added a photo but not sure how big it's going to be) It's strange because my listing is the only one in the area I found like this. Maybe the possible explanation for this is other hosts don't have seperate pricing for the summer season.

I think this is usefull. I do have a fixed price that I state in official bill. Also a lot of time people were not aware of amount of discount I give and that my listing is most of time worth more that they are paying, but I use airbnb to fill in last minute.

But how to make that appear on listing?
I tried raising normal price and than changing back to lower one, as I do have off season prices now and nothing.

It's not clear why this appears for some hosts and not others. So I don't think hosts can "make" it happen, though you can try a bunch of things and see if you get the result. I like ANdrew's method of setting a "normal" price of $999 a night. WHy not? If you really don't want to host those days but someone is willing to spend that kind of money to stay, you may decide it is worth your while.

I agree that this shouldn't have done without consent especially if for some hosts the crossed out price isn't a price they offer at all. With a lot of the so called "improvements" on Airbnb they disappear as quick as they appear, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case here, a sort of test trial to see what happens. At the moment it isn't causing me a problem or is it detering anyone from booking so I'm just going to wait and see what the results are.
I didn't do anything for this to show up, just kept my rates the way they were, so I'm not sure how the Airbnb robot decides whether or not to show it.
I like Andrews method too, I'm going to keep a note of it just in case!!

My listing is definitely priced under the price bracket it should have. Looking at a point of view as a guest when coming to Greece they search for the accommodation which will fit their needs, but also come at a bargain price. The problem here is that when doing so people think about the current and ongoing crisis here which has left the country on its last legs, thinking that as a country we need the money so we'll take anything they offer which usually is a lot less. Airbnb has been proposing the past months that I base my price around 35euros per night (based on seasonal demand bla bla), its not worth the hassle for that amount and it definitely does not cover all the expenses, amenities etc., in this case I would rather it stay empty and host guests that are appreciative of what I offer for my price. A lot of the listings in my area are low priced which means everytime someone new pops up and lowers their price everyone else follows, making it easy for guests to compare the value between listings on first sight when searching.
To tell you the truth I don't expect it to give me a sudden rush in bookings or stop guests from booking. Yes it would be great if Airbnb gave us the choice in whether or not we would like to participate when rolling out something new, even just a notification would be great! I think they have become more guest orientated lately as a company forgetting about the hosts completely.

I didn't see anything on my listing but I whish I didn't have any false discount on my profile. French authorities are very strict with discounts... If you don't see me anymore it may be because I'm in jail for false discount, uncovered by insurance free babies and surely for hitting some airbnb developer.

I've just checked my listing again via icognito mode and today the crossed out price isn't showing!
