New Airbnb Unusual Request, I wonder if it is REAL!
I have been Hosting since 2011 and I am somewhat confused as to why Airbnb needs to verify my identity!!!!! They are asking for my Driver's licence Number which I am not happy to give away in case it gets stolen. I have to stress the fact that Airbnb failed me and I am owed 70 pounds from a previous malicious guest who damaged my window blinds!
Airbnb has all my credentials, and verifications. I am not happy with this and I would like to be contacted by someone in USA. I feel let down by the way the UK Airbnb team are treating me.
It is only fair that if Airbnb in the UK want to start a "witch hunt" then I would also like to verify the Identity of everyone who works on the other side of the telephone.

Then it's real and it will soon be required of all hosts and guests across the board regardless of past account history. www.airbnb.com/help/question/450

Glenn, I am still not happy with this procedure. I rather give my passport as a Verify ID but not my driving licence. Also I would like to verify your ID! LOL

I believe you can use your passport. And thanks for the offer, but my ID was verified already, in fact I was one of the first hosts to be verified. =)

Hi Elizabeth, I scanned my driving licence for Air Bnb,... but I think you can give any government ID as well. I am actually all for ID checks on both hosts and guests for obvious reasons. I understand your concern but its not often I have to lodge my driving licence details and Air bnb would be the first place I would look at should things start to go astray lol. If my daughter was a guest in someones home, I would certainly feel happier that the Hosts has been verified. I actually would have no objection to Police checks being done, thats the way of the world these days.
Sorry to hear about your malicious guest, that is most unpleasant... hope its sorted.
Cheers Noel

You are correct Noel, Passports are valid for Verified ID. See: www.airbnb.com/help/question/451
The expressed privacy concerns are very real. But think about how many Guests we as Hosts come into contact with. Verified ID goes further to ensure the safety of Hosts more than anything. Once my ID was verified, I no longer accepted Guests without it, unless they had already been positively reviewed by another Host. Airbnb also has a very stringent Privacy Policy. The document scans are stored by a separate partner company Jumio, which specializes in online identity verification.
Verified ID was a major undertaking. But when you consider that at the base of what many of us are doing, community or not, we are letting strangers into our houses, the least we can ask of someone is to prove that they are who they say they are.

I totally agree here Glenn We have had a couple of guests that actually signed up in Tasmania on their travels and I believe verification might have been inconvenient. We did ponder on this, had my wife been alone I would have suggested that we turn away the guest. As it happened they were the sweetest of people, nothing sinister there, but security for everyone is off the essence and we would do well to protect ourselves and our children.
Thank you for that Glen, take care. Noel
