Sika and Cancelations with Full refund
One of my guest wants to cancel his stay because of the Sika's virus and asks for a full refund (my cancelation policy is strict). As any nation in the world the virus is a concern here but fortunately it hasn´t spread to my city yet (there have been reported only 5 cases in the whole country since the virus is known). He was supossed to arrive in May and has has booked my place last week so the virus news shouldn´t be a suprise for him when he decided to arrange his trip.
It is not an issue for me to refund him as I believe there is plenty of time to fill those dates in May but I'm concern that I might be opening a door to the tricky ones that wants to use the Sika virus as an argument to book a place, save those dates and then decide what to do (after all the Sika virus thread will cover me later for a full refund if I change my mind).
What would you do?
Thanks for your help :)Flor.

I'd refer him to Airbnb for cancellation. I'm curious to see if they consider Sika to be an extenuating circumstance. My understanding is that the virus is only a concern for pregnant women or women planning to get pregnant within 2 years. Was this man traveling with a female in one of those categories?

I suggest that you ask Airbnb about this matter, as they are sending hosts some advices on how to act regarding cancellations .

There is also evidence that the virus has been transmitted sexually from one human host to another - so it should also be of concern to male sexual partners of women who are or who might become pregnant.
Still, there are far more prevalent and dangerous diseases around the world that are not regarded as Extenuating Circumstances. And Argentina is not regarded as a high-risk location by any means. So I don't think this guest has a case for overriding your cancellation policy.
What I would tell him is that, as a host, I don't handle the monetary transactions, so he'll have to cancel the booking through Airbnb. If he is upset about not getting a full refund, I'd note that I don't receive any payment before his check-in date, and I therefore have no funds to transfer to him. In other words - it's out of my hands, go to Airbnb for the partial refund, or consult your travel insurance.

Well from what I read this morning, women that are not preganant and don't plan to get pregnant only have to wait about 30 days after visiting area since it lives in the blood stream but dies out in that time. In Men that is a different story because it lives in their semen and they do NOT know how long it lives there yet. I live in Miami and we already have cases here but month were travelers that came back already infected. I suppose in the summer we will have more cases. So this might happen to florida hosts as well, especially after the Olympics. Please keep us updated on what Airbnb will do in this case.
