An Australian family on holiday on the country’s Gold Coast were shocked to discover that their Airbnb rental was being used a drugs den.
The house that the family had rented was raided by armed police while Dieter Winkler and his children - the youngest of which is ten - were enjoying a barbecue in the back garden.
Unbeknown to them, upstairs in a bedroom lay sophisticated hydroponic equipment for growing marijuana, along with plants that were seized by police.
The bedroom, one of three in the Burleigh Heads property, had been labelled out of bounds by the owner of the house who rented it to the Winkler family via Airbnb.
Officers in bulletproof vests detained and questioned the family for five hours after making the discovery, according to Australia’s Daily Telegraph.
The family reportedly paid around 1,800 AUS dollars on their 11-night stay and then had to find alternative accommodation. They had been told that the bedroom was off limits due to an electrical fault.
The newspaper reported that police charged a 40-year-old woman with “unlawfully producing a dangerous drug” and confirmed that the Winkler family was unaware of the operation.
Airbnb provided the Winklers with a refund of 4,400 AUS $ to compensate for their expenditure.
"More than 60 million guests have stayed at an Airbnb property and while incidents like this are incredibly rare, we take them very seriously," an Airbnb spokesman said.
"There is absolutely no place for this sort of activity on Airbnb and this property has been banned. We've been in contact with the guest in this situation and will continue to do everything we can to offer our support."
My two cents: why on earth would someone who has illegal drugs on their property, rent it out on Airbnb?
