Cleaning Fee
Hi all,
I currently charge a $8 cleaning fee and do the cleaning myself. i.e. wash the sheets, dust, sweep, clean bathroom, etc. Do most of you tack on a cleaning fee or do you just incorporate the cleaning fee into your overall price? I currently charge $68/night plus a $8 cleaning fee.
Thoughts?

I just include it in the price, but our rate is $150-200 so there's room for it.

Aloha Susan, I had to have a look at your listing. I totally LOL'd at your statement in your House Rules..." respect our neighbors and treat it like your own home (unless you're a pig in which case, treat it better). " This to too funny. Good Job!!
Susan
Thanks Rhonda. In spite of really minimal house rules, we've been really lucky to have wonderful, respectful guests who treated the cottage like home (or better . Our worst guests were a couple 21+ Year old girls, first visit to wine country. And they weren't even bad, just a bit more cleaning than usual. I lived in Kaneohe for 2 or 3 years in the 80s and still miss Hawaii.

Helga is entertained with my 'ferocious hunter' stories. We have wild boar problems here, thus my fencing and gates. I haven't even traveled down the road of sharing those as the fence was placed prior to the guest house gig. Just tickled me how much I hate pigs.
Susan
I do like to eat them though.

Ditto what Susan said. If I make an exception to my no kids policy, I'll tack on an extra $30 cleaning fee....all those fingerprints on the window!!
Rhonda
I make no exceptions for the kids policy. When I first started I had a host requesting stay with toddler. I had an extra person fee at that time and she gave me grief about it. I kindly mentioned THE FINGERPRINTS on the windows, etc. Anyway, I took the booking with no extra fee and every window and mirror had fingerprints. They even let the kid go into the other guests room following us as I was greeting them and the kid plastered his dirty little hands all over the closet mirror doors. grrr. I'm a slow mover when things irritate me, so it actually was 3 months before I was totally rid of those little prints. The mommy did not bring ONE toy for the kid and let him play with all my cat's toys...ewww. I had another elderly couple who the mommy decided the gentleman could play Grandpa and babysit. That was quite a learning experience. I changed my listing to no extra ppl, not a child friendly home, etc., and low and behold if guests just a cpl weeks later didn't show up with a 6 month old. He cried all night, mommy nursing in the bed, and continued to cry all morning long even with daddy taking him for a walk outside. I also have the pool, so I don't really care for children to be here for safety reasons; although I've had plenty older children who were most perfect guests.
Rhonda
The guest had showed up at 10 pm with the baby. The Daddy could see the shock on my face that mommy had conveniently left that little additional piece of information out. I didn't want to put them out on the street. The next one that did show up on the wrong day with baby I did put out on the street (referring them to a hostel) and kept the entire fee.

Lol about the cat toys. My last guest with kid in the South wrote a nice review about all the toys I have. So I suppose the kid got to play with the parrot's toys. (I have beach toys, but the cars and batman sculptures are all the bird's toys.)
Rhonda
I do have some games as well as card games and books for the older than 10 years old guests. I had two children, their parents in the living room on their computers, the kids bouncing around...grrr...I show them, ask them if they know how to play this or that and it was immediately apparent that they were expecting me to join them. I remember family vacations where the point was to spend time with one another in the family. That seems to becoming a thing of the past in so many cases.
Ernest
We include it in with the rate for the room. Our thinking is that guests who pay an extra fee for this service may leave more of a mess for us to clean.
Rhonda
Ernest, that is exactly my theory. They've already paid the maid. In addition, all those add on fees are quite discouraging to potential guests.
Mario
I charge $29 and no one has ever had a problem. Also, I don't accept children and usually folks over 30, so my past 17 guests have been great and no issue with cleaning, the fee or party animals. Guess it's different for everyone
Serafina
I don't charge a cleaning fee for my private bedroom listing and charge a $15 "cleaning" fee for my whole house, mostly to make single-night rentals a bit more palatable.
Caroline
I do add a cleaning fee, it doesn't seem to be a deal breaker. I allow guests the facilities of a kitchen and the ability to do laundry, the latter is especially appreciated by international guests on tour of the UK.
Deborah
I charge a cleaning fee for private room, mostly to help compensate for one night stays. No one has complained but I think it may have kept some from booking especially for one nights. Most of my competition charges it, however one "newbie" does not and has flexible cancellation. We are as busy as we want to be so I plan to leave it as is.
Leah
I charge $15 to help with the cost of short stays. Guests have left my place surprisingly clean. Some even strip the bed or take out the garbage! Good reminder of putting something about not flushing anything but toilet paper down the toilet/ I don't have that. Would hate to have a clogged toilet!
Rhonda
Aloha Leah, Clogged and flooding seemed to be the host's nightmare of at the beginning of the month. Quite a global lesson took place.
