Shoes eaten by dog
Hi Everyone, As a host, I do whatever is possible for a successful guest experience. As a guest, I realize that my experience in another's home will be different than if I were the host. We were guests this weekend. There were a few problems like a toilet overflowing when I husband used it for the first time. A pail was substituted (for flushing) until the toilet could be replaced the next day. No problem, these things happen!
Then there was the dog; a bit strange, followed us around, but wouldn't let us pet it. Even that was okay because we love dogs. So the real kicker was when I left my clogs by the front door, so as not to track mud in the house as requested by the host. Right before I went to bed and needed to get something out of the refrigerator, the host said that he had bad news. My heart jumped, I thought maybe it was a problem with our truck. No, he said, "my dog destroyed your clogs and she is very sorry". It was late, I took a look at the shoes and sure enough the back end was eaten. Though I wasn't happy, I was about to go to bed and we'd discuss it in the morning.
The host did a google check on my clogs and printed up a price which was the wrong color. The intentions were good, but the color was light and knowing how hard I can be on shoes, I will always opt for dark colors. The host thought this was okay, but the price differential was $40. I mentioned that the shoes weren't the same and he handed me over the cash amount from the print-out and said that "was what he was comfortable paying because they were last season's.
So here is the rub; I know how hard hosting can be and it can be challenging, but I don't feel like I can leave them a good review. I hate like heck to do this, but if it were me, I would have coughed up the money, and put my puppy in a different spot while guests were there. They definitely did nothing to curb their dog's presence.
One other thing, this was a shared bathroom with the hosts. Then there were another 2 people sharing the bathroom totally 6 people. This wasn't in the description, and it stated that there was only 1 bedroom. All these things add up to one big annoyance.
Guys, what would you do??? (for a review). I am not sure. Please help. Thank you for reading!!!!!
Gretchen
I'd write an honest review.
Mig (mig)
I understand your reticence, but an honest review is the best policy. It will hopefully make the hosts up their game, and let future guests know what they are potentially letting themselves in for.
Evelyn
Leave an honest review.. And you can also leave your concerns privately. Is this a new host? Experienced? Etc...
Peter
Be up front and honest. He sounds like he needs to learn a lesson rather than be kicked out of Airbnb. I would say "it would have been nicer if the host had not declined to pay the full cost of replacement shoes for the ones he agreed his dog had eaten".
Nancy
They have been in the restaurant business (B&B style) and I think Home Away. I will leave an honest review. Would you have covered the full cost of the shoes?
Evelyn
Yes, I would have covered the full cost of the shoes, including shipping. And manage the dog better.
Queenie & Ted (queenie&ted)
I would have covered the full cost of the shoes plus shipping! The damage to your shoes was 100% their fault - you obeyed their house rules and suffered a loss as the result. If they can't safeguard guests' shoes, they need to offer a different place to store them or lighten up on the 'no-shoes' rule.

I agree with PEter's advice on what to state in the review --- or perhaps as another option, "X made a partial payment for the cost of my shoes that his dog ate... I would have preferred that he pay for the entire replacement cost."
