Airbnb has certainly shaken up the the traditional hotel/motel market! Here in NZ, the local hotel industry has only just woken up to the Airbnb "threat" and now there is much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Not that it amounts to very much so far. NZ laws allow home owners to rent out rooms and there is no definition that can be used to differentiate between Airbnb type activity and short term rental. However it has not stopped the Hotel and Motel Asso trying to discredit us at every opportunity. www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/279358/moteliers-fear-airbnb-taking-business So they have now stooped to low tactics, our Airbnb NZ host group on Facebook was recently infiltrated (for want of a better word) by a special investigator posing as a Airbnb host. Alarm bells started ringing when the investigator started asking questions trying to trip us up on things like Tax and fire safety. A quick check against the users name via Linkedin soon showed her true credentials (should of hired someone a bit more professional). Not a biggie for us in NZ, but shows that people are actively working against us. After reading about some hosts experiences in different countries. Just wondered if you tell us about what it is like in your part of the world?

Thanks, Catchafire, for sharing about the situation in NZ with the government "spies" out at work!! Nasty, nasty! WE have that going on in the USA as well -- most notably, in New York City. Evelyn, who is a well known host in NYC and who has helped with NYC host activism, can tell you a lot about that. (She is not yet a member of this forum but you can find her excellent webinars for hosts down in the Webinars board on this forum) Also, I have a section, you may have seen, about the various political/economic issues going on in different parts of the world, where I have posted news bits from around the world, having to do with Airbnb rentals and hosting You can see an article for instance about the "sting" operations that have gone on in NYC here; globalhosting.freeforums.net/thread/736/politician-undercover-illegal-hotel-stingTHere are a lot of issues of city regulations popping up all over the USA and the world -- I'm encouraging everyone to post that news and information here so we have all the news in one place and we can build up a library about it. THere is a LOT going on, and not good, in San Francisco, where only a couple months after a law was passed allowing short term rentals, the city turned around and decided the law wasn't working and eventually a proposition was put on the ballot to severely restrict host's ability to do short term rentals. Various other cities in the SF Bay ARea are addressing STR's, happily most less aggressively and more supportively than San Francisco, whose politics are shaped by the most expensive housing market in the USA as well as perhaps the greatest LACK of housing. I'll take your report on what is going on in NZ to put in the "news" section too, as a duplicate post there.....

We don't have a problem here in GB . There is even a tax break for renting out a room. Where I am there is such a shortage of accommodation in the high season that you would be very unlikely to meet hostility from hotels and b&b owners are beginning to use Airbnb because it is better than VisitScotland for bookings.
