New emphasis for Global Hosting Forum.
Recently, I spent some time reflecting on the changes in the host community since the inception of Airbnb. In the old days, one could just have a "general" hosting group and there would be a certain simpatico that would develop, as it was a heady time and there were far fewer of us. But these days, AIrbnb has changed and "hosting" has changed. Some "hosts" have 150 listings. Some have listings in the Ramada Hotel. Some have a dozen employees and never meet their guests. At the same time, AIrbnb has made policy changes that favor hosts who operate a more hotel-like operation, such as those who see no need to screen their guests.
So I thought it was time to go back to our roots and explore what was important to us hosts in the older days, and sift out some key points to emphasize. I thought it would be helpful to be able to point to a set of values that I stand for and this group stands for ...even if those values are a bit vague and imprecise.
I wrote this article as part of this exploration.

This article is intended more to spark thought and reflection than to provide answers. HOwever, there are a few themes that emerge. One is that I dont' think much of "hosts" with $ signs for eyeballs. ANother is that I think it is valuable to come back to "small is beautiful" and value smaller businesses, smaller scale hosting, not be overawed, or even interested at all, by "hosts" who write books about how to create an AIrbnb Empire and make millions from being a "host." Another is to take care of yourself and your own needs in your hosting work. Then too, to value the ability to run your business as you see fit, and not be happy with forces that seek to take away your own control over your own business or indeed your own home. This means saying "Just NO" to the "PLUS" phenomenon.
What other themes emerge for you in reflecting on this topic?
