I had a guest stay for 7 days in October, and then sent me a reservation alteration for an additional 2 days, which I approved. I got a "alteration request accepted/reservation confirmed" message from Airbnb, but come to find out, weeks later, that Airbnb never paid me for those additional 2 days. It's been now 2 phone calls and some emails to Airbnb to get this straightened out.
What I'm being told now is that the guest's payment never went thru to Airbnb. Meaning the credit card company froze the payment or some such thing, which is why I haven't been paid.
I explained to the CS person that this is a big f#$#-up on Airbnb's part -- that they cannot allow a reservation alteration to be confirmed, if the payment did not go thru. Duh!! Because that means the guest is staying at my house and I"m not getting paid for it.
In this case, this guest is an honest person, I believe she may be unaware of what happened and I believe she'll pay me for those 2 days.
But in general, unless AIrbnb fixes this glitch, there is a big risk for hosts in accepting reservation alteration requests because apparently there is no mechanism in place to ensure that the payment actually went thru, before the alteration is confirmed.
Hence, I am now going to tell guests that until Airbnb fixes this, I will no longer allow guests to alter any reservation in a way that results in an increased payment. They will have to make a 2nd reservation or pay me in cash.
