The small town of Ferndale, high up and way out in the woods on the California coast, has a small newspaper, and into the papers' office building, they have now built an Airbnb stay. www.poynter.org/news/140-year-old-california-weekly-rents-out-its-building-airbnbThis is a very cute town just up the coast from an even cuter and much more remote town called Petrolia, which I've been to several times. I thought I counted about 4 or 5 buildings in Petrolia's "downtown", which is more like a series of dollhouses circling round a central lawn, which you only get to by driving miles and miles over mountainous countryside towards the coast ( a coast so far from the main drag it is deemed "Lost" -- goes by the official name "Lost Coast") and then after about 1.5 hrs you finally come to little Petrolia. The coast is breathtaking near here, where you can hike and camp. It also tends to be very windy on the coast in this area. The "Lost Coast" near Petrolia and not far from Ferndale: I've backpacked the Lost Coast a few times -- it's a 3 or 4 day backpack, out and back, and can involve some hairy passages between the steep cliffs and the roaring sea, particularly if you cross at the wrong tide. Best crossing is low tide. If you arrive at high tide and can't wait the several hrs for low tide, you may end up like this: I once had to dash across the beach between waves to avoid this kind of situation. I ran into other backpackers who didn't fare so well in their timing and lost a camera to the sea. Altogether breathtaking:
