Complaint bout "low flow toilets."
I had two toilets that my guests were using...one was an old, tank mounted on the wall type that was not low-flow -- it used the whole large tank of water with each flush. In 10 years of use, never once was that toilet clogged. But, sadly, that toilet ultimately became cracked and started to leak, so I removed it and replaced it with a newer "low flow"style toilet.
Then there's the newer, low-flow toilet - which I now have two of -- which is the only type one can buy new now at least in my state. This uses 1.6 gallons of water per flush or even less. This toilet has had a dozen clogs over the last several years, 3 in the last 2-3 months. It seems that at least once a month now, I get notified by one of my guests that "the toilet doesn't work: the water wont' go down."
When I go and check, it's never a pretty sight. Suffice it to say, it's never a bowl of clear water that I come and find!!
A plunger doesn't work in such situations -- but I can clear the clog pretty quickly using a toilet auger, which is the tool plumbers use -- and I'm a plumber so I have one.
I'm pretty sure all these clogs are occuring because my guests are using a lot of toilet paper "at one sitting", and the toilet can't handle such a big wad being flushed all at once. I have signs next to the toilets stating as much (I tell them that if they need to use a lot of Toilet Paper, that they need to put it in the waste basket, not the toilet) , and I've also notified each guest about this by email after each clog occurrence, but it keeps happening.
But I want to say -- if you have an old-fashioned HIGH flow toilet that uses more water -- keep it. You'll probably have fewer clogs because the greater force of more water seems to do a better job forcing the contents down.
