A study by an "Airbnb watchdog" states that most of the hosting revenue in black neighborhoods goes to white hosts, something that would lessen the impact of Airbnb's argument that they are helping the black community through providing folks in black neighborhoods the opportunity to be AIrbnb hosts.
“Black neighborhoods with the most Airbnb use are racially gentrifying, and the (often illegal) economic benefits of Airbnb accrue disproportionately to new, white residents and white speculators,” the author of the study, Murray Cox, wrote. The study, conducted by Inside Airbnb (www.insideAirbnb.com), used facial recognition software to determine hosts’ races based on their Airbnb profile photos in the city’s 72 predominantly black neighborhoods. Whites make up 13.9 percent of the overall population in those neighborhoods, but disproportionately account for 74 percent of the total Airbnb host population, according to the study.
The writer disingenuously suggests that Airbnb should be "doing something" about these data...really? Airbnb should be deciding where millions of people live, and who gets to host? Oh come on, stop already with these stupid ideas that Airbnb should be doing vast social engineering far beyond its role as a rental marketplace. If property owners want to host, Airbnb is not stopping them! I really get annoyed with people who want to blame Airbnb for political issues in the society at large.
Here's the short version of the Inside Airbnb report:
