Planning and building staffers have been scouring websites like AirBNB.com and VRBO.com, sending cease and desist letters to homeowners who are advertising vacation rentals in areas of town where they aren’t allowed. Twenty such letters have been sent out since Jan. 1. In one example homeowners received a printout of an online advertisement they had posted along with a note explaining why they weren’t allowed to rent short term. For the first time ever, citations are beginning to work their way through the town’s legal system. People found to be breaking the law could face a penalty of up to $750 a day.
