Their primary funding originally came from the hotel workers union, and it was then determined that the union was given extra funding by several hotel consortiums to use for their propaganda.
Strange thing... the hotel workers are probably better off working for STR hosts. Hotel maids get barely over minimum wage and have to clean 3 rooms an hour. Most STR's they get paid more and have to do less work.
For the part time hotel worker, STR turnovers make a lot more sense. For the full time worker who needs the benefits, the steady job at a low wage may be preferable.
In any case, in major cities like SF and NY, the hotel industry is thriving even in the face of STR's. Their median room rate over a 12 month period has been affected since they can't price gouge popular dates as much as they used to. This bothers them, as this is where much of their extra margins come from.
