Air BnB Hosts in Ireland being excluded from the rent-a-room relief!
Hi fellow hosts! I am a host from Dublin and I am writing this message to ask for your support. As you may or may not be aware recently Air BnB agreed to hand over all the financial details of hosts in Ireland to the Government. The Government then 'clarified' that, all hosts must pay 41-51% of earnings in tax. In Ireland we have a rent-a-room scheme which allows people to rent out a room in their primary residence for up to €12,000 a year without paying tax. Hosts were told by both Air BnB and the revenue that we could avail of this tax break. They have now changed their minds and we are caught in the middle. We are petitioning the Irish Government to include us under the rent-a-room scheme. We would greatly appreciate and greatly need your support! Can you please sign the petition? Feel free to share it too!Thank-you for letting us post this here! Here is the link to the petition

Shannon:
Are they writing in a new law or merely disobeying/ or re interpreting the current law? I am not a lawyer and I don't know anything about Irish law, but have your read the law itself and can you clearly apply it to your situation, or not?
Karen:
Hi Shannon! Thanks for your comment! Yeah it's a tricky one. They have changed the language on the law to say that it only applies to 'long term, residential lettings and does not include income earned on short term letting sites'! But it is all subject to interpretation really, what is long term, what is residential etc. At the moment we are trying to gather signatures so that we can petition our government to change this before the budget, which is in October. If that doesn't work then we have to go legal! :/ Oh the fun!
Shannon:
It sounds like what the hotels are doing here in America. They lobby/bribe our representatives to change the law to 30 day. Here in Charleston there are 150 hosts and they change the law for 150 people or for a few Hotels? I think the hotels. Don't know what I am going to do when the tax bill rolls around here it is 28 percent.
Karen:
Oh no! Sorry to hear that Shannon. I really hope Air BnB will fight for hosts like us. Like you say the tax earned on 150 people is nothing, but the money earned by those hosts is a lifeline! :/
Shannon:
There is no such thing as corporate on corporate crime. There is white on white, black on black, brown on brown, christian on other religion, other religion on christians and thick mental people on innocent victim people CRIMES everyday. The corporations stand united. Haven't you noticed? So how then shall we deal with the dragon. I say we revisit alternative forms of advertising and letting. Take a page from Helga's book and think Pre Airbnb box.

No corporate crime? I'm still hoping that the States will pursue those VW bosses - if it depends on Europe, Winterkorn will go home with 60 Millions for frauding everyone and causing thousands of cancer dead per year with diesel emanations.

Karen, I signed your petition already as did a few others. Someone posted it before and another host from Ireland, a young lady, was very furious and desperate about it too. I had a guest coming back from a trip to Berlin, they have similar laws in place now. Forbade short term, but who wants to continue to rent had to register for an exceptional permit for two years. After that, nobody knows. They even send out undercover fake guests to catch those not registered. The Berlin hosts asks for passports now in advance...
Shannon:
Helga, I have two words General Motors! America has it's own corporate crimes to NOT deal with. Don't look to America for help.
helga:
At least you jailed Madoff. Even if you let France buy out the Credit Lyonnaise boss. Still hoping - once in a while it vould work
Shannon:
HOLY COW, for real? You would think they had better things to do? Like chase around all those Syrians and catch a drug dealer, maybe hunt down a hooker still working with aids? CRIMINNY. I just do not get it. Is it they don't want us to think independent? They will not share a tiny crumb off the table? SHAZAM Berlin has fallen!
Rosanne:
As large hotels continue to put pressure on city to try and do away with BnB hosts there will be more and more laws and taxes put on Hosting
Shannon:
We need to find a way to keep it more private.
Serena:
Is this open to legal challenge? Can you get a tax law expert to advise pro-bono? Certainly in UK AirBnB can count as part of rent a room scheme if you are letting your main home. And the Give has just upped the rent a room scheme threshold from £4k to £7k.
The Gov. Not Give. (They usually take!)
Signed.
Karen:
Thanks for your support guys! We hope that they will change it over the coming weeks (our budget) if not then we plan to challenge it legally. Like you say Serena it counts in the UK and the laws are very similar. I think they are trying to see what they can get away with so hopefully we can put up enough of a fight!
