Watching the news right now.. wondering if we have any hosts here in Istanbul. How are you all handling this attack...

That was a very bad night, even in country with a history of military coups. The crackdown will be worse - if Erdogan ever needed any justification for his authoritarian purges, he has it now. .

That was quite frightening -- I have a good friend who visited Istanbul last year as a tourist. I was so glad she had visited last year rather than this summer. I don't know any hosts in Istanbul....this would certainly have a very negative effect on their lives and their business.

I have a two month long stay guest here from Ankara. Last night her mom streamed her video of explosions you could see against the skyline. She wishes she was there with her family, of course.

I just hosted a group one that happened to leave the same day of the terrorist attack to their airport. They left in the morning though. They were defiantly nervous then this happened once they returned home. Even though their stay with me had long finished I still messaged them to see if they were ok. They replied and said they were shocked about what was happening but they were safe in their home. I didn't know if it was appropriate to contact a guest after they had long finished their stay but I went for it anyway. You make little friendships sometimes or you care for the guest. I think Airbnb is special like that because we get personal with people. They were also very greatful for the concern.

I think it's fine to contact guests after their stay --- also it's sweet to show care for people after they have left your home.
I sometimes have to contact guests long after their stay for not so pleasant reasons -- such as -- I am getting loads of mail for them, because they violated my house rules and gave out my address, and got on various mailing lists. I just had to do that this week after getting 5 items of mail for someone who stayed at my house for 10 days, 6 months ago.
