My husband was in The Phantom of the Opera and after two years performing in Toronto he was offered a role in the Asian tour, and I went with him. This was about 20 years ago. We were six months in Singapore and six months in Hong Kong, with a month in between that we used to tour through Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia.
This article does not surprise me at all. Singapore is beautiful, clean, organized and efficient. And in my opinion - totally soulless. It was too much like a nanny state for my liking. It's also one of the most racist places I've stayed. Acceptable races, in order - Mandarin Chinese, Aussies, Brits, Americans, Canadians. Anyone browner than that - you're out of luck getting ahead in life. I much preferred the chaotic mess of Hong Kong which felt so much freer to me. Nobody cares what you do as long as you take care of yourself. Sell gum on the street? No problem! Real estate billionaire? You're cool too! Able bodied but begging? You're not getting much sympathy. Hong Kong is an island of people used to hustling to put food on the table, and they love success - they would ask us how much we make, how much money do we have in the bank, etc. Not because they are nosy but because they are so eager to learn from others. Singapore always felt like it was more about "you have something that you shouldn't, so I'll fix you".

Interesting Milu -- to hear about your experience of Singapore. I had heard rumors it was a very "clean" place --- perhaps that fits right in with what you describe!
