Several years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer. There was no way I could have prepared myself for such news. I felt a mix of shock, despair and anxiety about what it meant for my family’s future. While my employers were understanding and offered me a flexible schedule as I went through treatment, chemotherapy took its toll and left me too exhausted to work.
Losing my only source of income left me panic-stricken. How was I going to afford my lifesaving medication? How would the bills and the rent get paid?
Not knowing what my future held, I turned to friends and loved ones for support. That’s when a childhood friend from Barbados offered a suggestion that I had never before considered: sharing my residence through Airbnb to help make ends meet.
I wasn’t too sure about the idea at first, but after some prayer I opted to give it a try, both renting out a room and, at times, my entire apartment.
